Hello loyal readers, it's been a while but I am happy to finally be back at my desk behind the keyboard. The past few weeks have been quite hectic, but it’s been nothing but good news. My wife and I have been prepping for a move into our new home, and unfortunately much of the work was done on the past couple of Wednesdays. Lucky for us, we found some time to catch a breather out on the Bay for my first ever Father’s day, and rustled up a few Orange Crushes in between.

Morgan, Patrick Sr., and I met the charter captain beneath the Solomons Island Bridge at the public dock and boat ramp. The charter was a new one for us, Captain Travis of Schooled Up charters manned the helm and his son Nick served as mate for the three of us. Father-son teams are always great to watch, there is no BS on deck and you will always know exactly where you stand - literally and figuratively. This boat is only so big, and casting next to 5 people can end up in a snag if you don’t look over your shoulder first.

We set out with the goal of “live lining,” a technique where one uses smaller living fish to lure and catch larger fish. In this case, local knowledge of the food chain goes a long way, and a fish called Spot is a delectable treat for the highly sought after Striped Bass. This means that in order to catch the Striper, one must put in the work hauling in a few Spot to throw their way. In short, the math is simple. Big fish eat smaller fish, and no plastic bait can out perform the real thing.

Doesn’t get much better than this on the Chesapeake Bay. My first Father’s Day delivered quite the backdrop.

This Wilderness Wednesday, Flounder fishing with family brought me to Chincoteague, Virginia for my first visit to the gateway to Assateague.

I’ve certainly been spending much of my time on the Eastern Shore this summer, making for new backdrops to some of my favorite outdoor activities. You may have caught the posts from the previous weeks during my time on Smith Island - which I will be revisiting in the near future. I still have an entire album to show off, but I figure a little variety is in order.

My Dad, Patrick Sr., put the flounder fishing on the radar of Morgan and myself back in May - with some staggering fishing reports along the Chincoteague Bay. With scheduling conflicts, we pushed it back to June for the same week. It had been years since I chased the fish, and talk of declining population numbers of late makes the hours long drive from the mainland seem a little excessive to those who don’t have local resources to call. Additionally, the regulation on bag limit and length make for very restrictive keep standards. Luckily for us we grew up fishing Striped Bass along the Chesapeake Bay. To those who may be unfamiliar, the concept of small slots and tight regulations are something we are quite intimate with, and would never deter us from a day on the water.

Here we are again, a thousand photos to post and only 10 to be posted. A weekend alongside my best friends, my cherished family, and my lovely wife came and went as quickly as the Poplar goes from green to bare. It was nothing short of a triumph - made possible by the love shared between all those in our lives.

One of my favorite things about the art of photography is to see how others can look through the same viewfinder and find art in ways I never dreamed. The candid shots and the intimate moments no one sees are the photos that get me every time. An artist, as I the interpret concept, is someone who pours so much of themselves into their work that their numerous fingerprints remain, creating a vision unique to the hands that made it. The end result is their soul manifested. Amy at @silverpebblephotography stuck out to me for all the reasons above, and more, when scouting for someone to document our special day. I admire her as a veteran, and have learned much as someone who places the art of photography in such high regard.

After experiencing her professionalism when it mattered, and her levity when it was needed, I'm proud to call her a lifelong friend.

This past weekend, in a trip as fleeting as the barn swallow, My fiance @buseyml and I walked together hand in hand through the trees that will witness our union this October.

As a Hokie, Mountain Lake Lodge was where I first learned my love of the trail, and served as the porthole by which I first glimpsed the beauty of the natural world. Ten years since I picked up a camera and took to the trees for the first time, this ridge top will soon become the backdrop to our marriage. Some of you followers have been around since my earliest shots, and have walked beside me since my timeline was covered in iPhone 6 selfies and blurry composition.

The spring mountain mornings brought fog at daybreak, which sat thick over the peak until late morning, when it vanished all at once and revealed crisp blue sky. Those who reside in the New River Valley know that these mornings are to be treasured, for these are the few remaining days before the Virginia humidity settles in for the summer season.

We set out to hike twice during our twenty-four hour stay, and I had the opportunity to introduce my new hiking boots to two trails responsible for wearing out several preceding pairs. Many of the trees had thinned over the years since my last visit. On the southern side of the lake’s “bowl,” The last vestiges of what used to be a lush singular canopy stood overhead like skeletons. The ferns beneath flourished in the absence of overhead coverage and made for a sea of green on each flank.

Dappling the backdrop of green were orange clusters of Wild Azalea, never too far from the sound of water carving through a nearby drainage. From above came the song of the Veery, a song with which I was not familiar, and can best be described as the audible version of shimmering, or twinkling. If you hear it, you’ll see what I mean.

The World Unseen

December arrives to greet us whistling a tune fraught with frost, and most cope behind their eyes with images of sand warming their toes on a summertime shoreline.

When I think about my bare feet on the sandy shoreline I consider the world unseen, that starts at the break of the atlantic and extends endlessly beyond the sandbar. The surface is the border between terrestrial man and the dominion of fins, creatures who use the water as a three dimensional space the same way birds do the sky. Cold and unyielding are the currents, yet Pelagics such as the pictured Yellowfin Tuna effortlessly dart through those forces that show us no mercy.

The photos on this Wilderness Wednesday take place far from the deciduous forests of Virginia, with dirt replaced by fiberglass beneath my deck boots. A twin engine diesel hums beneath a rhythm of the hull slicing through the swell in time. Our element as Humans is far behind us, yet we pierce the bubble beneath with an exploratory hubris distinct to man.

That day is one I will never forget. Flying fish breached the surface two hundred strong, slapping the side of the boat in vain attempts to escape the pod of predators beneath. Tuna followed on a second breach, thrust by their giant tails to 50+ miles per hour. The velocity behind a Tuna breach resembling a football leaving the hands of Tom Brady as it sailed through the air behind the flying fish. All the while, the clumsy humans float in their rubber ducky to capitalize on the chaos.

If you ever get the chance, Get out past the breakers. An entirely alien form of wilderness awaits.
