Not every disability is visible. But that doesn’t make it any less real.
October 18-24 is Invisible Disabilities Week, a time to recognize the experiences that often go unseen, misunderstood, or dismissed.

For people living with skeletal neuromuscular channelopathies including periodic paralysis, non-dystrophic myotonias and related skeletal neuromuscular disorders, disability can look different from one day to the next, or even from one moment to the next. Muscle weakness, paralysis episodes, fatigue, pain, and the daily work of managing an unpredictable condition aren’t always visible to others.

Invisible disability can mean living with symptoms no one else can see, never knowing how you’ll feel tomorrow, navigating the impact of illness on everyday life, or having your experiences questioned because you don’t look sick. It can mean pushing through pain quietly, having to explain your needs again and again, or carrying struggles that others may never realize are there.

You can’t know someone’s whole story just by looking at them. And no one should have to prove they’re struggling to deserve understanding, accessibility, or support.

To our community: your disability is valid on the days your symptoms are visible and the days they aren’t. Your experiences matter, even when others don’t see what it takes to get through the day. You deserve to be heard, believed, and supported. 💙

This Invisible Disabilities Week, let’s listen a little more, assume a little less, and make room for experiences different from our own.

I can’t believe this is from 10 months ago, before I had any clue what was happening to my body. I remember feeling so scared then…but I had no idea how much harder things would get or what the months ahead would look like.

After countless treatments, setbacks, and small victories, I’m finally more stable and just days away from my thymectomy.

While there are no guarantees, I’m feeling hopeful that this surgery could bring some of the relief I’ve been fighting for since this all began.

Please Stop Telling Patients It Can’t Be Done
Denied Care Delivered Abroad and My Journey Through Medical Exile

This essay details my five year post-operative triumph following a specialized, cross border surgery. After facing clinical dismissal and being told my condition was inoperable by top Canadian physicians, I successfully challenged the medical consensus to seek life-giving care in the US.

This piece highlights a profound, structural system failure that leaves millions of Canadians trapped in medical limbo, suffering while serving a functional death sentence.

It's estimated that 1 in 8 Canadians are struggling to survive a failing bureaucratic holding pattern. We defend our public healthcare like it's our moral duty. But what about the human cost of its limitations and failures?

I am calling for institutional education, rare disease pathways, and an end to dismissing desperate patients.

I had to leave Canada for essential healthcare. It wasn't "medical tourism." It was a heartbreaking betrayal. It was medical exile.

Not everyone has the education, ability or resources to leave their family to cross the border for healthcare. Nor should they have to.

They need to stop telling patients it can't be done, and start finding ways to help them.
