In my head I always say Chicag-y, instead of Chicago, like Jay Electronica in ‘Ezekiel’s Wheel’ (“It could be in Lagos or Seattle or Chicag-y / Hotel lobby, Grammy afterparty, it’s what-avi”) but anywayyy our short film TELL ME WHEN YOU GET HOME screens this Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:15pm at the Chicago International Film Festival.

The screening takes place at Gene Siskel Film Center, which I’m told is very fancy. Meet me there? Or, otherwise, if you have peeps in Chicago who would want to see it, let me know and I’ll try to give them a ticket.

There is a second screening of the same shorts block, “Black Perspectives Shorts: Love with No Place to Go”, on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 6:00pm. I won’t be there but, same goes, let me know if you will be!

A BlackStar for the books 🖤

Sharing @tellme.film with an audience of so many loved ones and chosen fam is something I will never forget. It’s hard to describe the magic of @blackstarfest in words, but I felt it all weekend watching movies, cracking jokes, and dancing with you all. Thank you for selling out our screening and for being the best support system a girl could ask for 🥹

TELL ME took home the honorable mention Jury Award in the Short Narrative category! Thank you to the programmers and jury for this special recognition. Congrats to our entire cast and crew, especially my sister producers @jackiepayton @syd.alicia and @patrice.notes, hereby known as The Rodriguez’.

The “Chile, Please!” shorts block was really incredible. Ya just had to be there! If you missed it, though, the film will likely screen again this Fall. I’ll keep everyone updated.

@blackstarfest staff did their big one (again). Continued power, love, and protection for this important work you do.

10 BlackStars in, and this one felt just as special as the first.

Every year, I get to reconnect with old friends, meet new people who leave me inspired, and spend a few days surrounded by a community that makes @blackstarfest one of the most meaningful creative environments I could ever ask to work in.

These photos capture maybe 2% of the story. The screenings, conversations, laughter, long days, and moments in between are something you truly have to experience for yourself.

Thank you, as always, to @maorikarmael and the entire BlackStar family for continuing to create something so special, year after year.

If you were there, what moment are you still carrying with you? And if you weren’t, I hope I get to see you there next year.

‘Don’t meet your heroes’ they say.

Depends who your heroes are. 🤔

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock has been one of my heaviest musical influences since I was in middle school. I’ve now seen him perform three times, and he somehow manages to get better and better each time. At age 86, he is not only defying the bounds of genre labels, but far surpassing the limitations we set in our own minds regarding the ability to perform music at an elevated level reaching an advanced age. He still ends his show by jumping up and down while playing the keytar 🤯.

Although @herbiehancock was the name on the billboard, every member of the band was next level. When you have @james_genus, @lionelloueke and my guy @jaylenpetinaud in you rhythm section, there are no limitations. Add in @terence_blanchard on horn and you are suddenly somewhere in outer space.

What a night. Thank you, Herbie 🙏🏽.

My short film Tell Me When You Get Home will have its East Coast Premiere at BlackStar Film Festival! This year’s fest is August 6-9 in Philadelphia 🥳🖤🌀❇️🧨

I started volunteering at BlackStar as a wee lass in 2015, and was blessed to screen films in the 2017 and 2020 programs. I’m excited to screen Tell Me When You Get Home in the community that nurtured my aesthetic sensibility, political understanding, and sense of self for the past 10 years.

📆 If you’re in or near Philly August 6-9 please come check us out!!! There’s also a virtual option for those who can’t attend in person.

🔗 Our screening date will be announced in a few weeks. Check out our website at tellmefilm.co for more details.
