Not a day goes by where music isn’t part of my life. Getting to be a small part of Charlotte’s annual @confluencecarolinas and @confluencemusicfest this week brought me back into connection with new friends, songs, lyrics, and ideas. If you are in the music industry or love the music industry - this is the place for you too!
What a finale (for me) to have the opportunity to discover a new incredible NC artist @pressleylatonmusic and then walk across the street and experience the magic of @risingappalachia with @sarahtollerson 💫

🌊 In honor of Juneteenth we are LOOKING BACK at our second production: SwimCap

SwimCap was an immersive, interactive theatre piece made to combat the stereotype that Black people can’t swim and celebrate the renaissance of Black swimming.

This powerful multi-sensory show moved the audience like a time machine through the past, present and future of Black swimming. It was presented festival style at the Historic Brooklyn Grace in August 2023. The audience spent 90 minutes rotating between theatre performances and art installations.

One of the resources studied for this show was Undercurrents of Power by Kevin Dawson. In it he argues that the cultural lie that “Black people don’t/can’t swim” is intentionally and systemically created division, which sets the stage for cultural erasure.

We set out to redefine that relationship to water and celebrate its magic in a joyful way.✨

📅 BIG NEWS! We are actually bringing a bit of the production BACK for a limited time! Join us Thursday, July 16 at @ywcacentralcarolinas for a powerful conversation in partnership with @evolutionaryaquatics exploring Charlotte’s Black swimming story through artistic and educational perspectives. You can register at ywcacentralcarolinas.org

🎭🎭🎭 5 years ago @mixedmetaphorsclt began.
Starting a theatre company is not a safe bet, and dedicating that company to work of creating community-led devised theatre, even those words, make it even less of a guarantee.

📝📝📝We start every project with a blank piece of paper. We ask questions so we can hear the answer. We press our ears to the ground listening for whispered stories so we can turn them into shouts.

👑🏙🐝We are by Charlotte, about Charlotte, and for the betterment of Charlotte.

And when we say that...we mean it. (And we have the receipts to prove it!)💅

💰💰💰Over the past 5 years we have redirected over $4,000 of our ticket sales to our community collaborators like @westblvdcoalition @evolutionaryaquatics and @qcfamilytree .

The Renaissance documentary was incredible. I left feeling energized and inspired.

Beyoncé is an ENTIRE INDUSTRY. You hear me?

We kiki’d, we danced and sang our little hearts out. I don’t think a single person remained still in their seats. So glad to experience the film with my people. 🤍
