Have you considered taking your child to an art show opening?

It is important to me that our son is exposed to art, in all forms, and that he has a chance to interact in various environments. I want him to be comfortable in all spaces: child-centered, adult-centered, and integrated.

Living in Seattle, I have not found many integrated spaces and it seems like events are either catered to adults or children. I’m sure there are reasons for this, but part of what I need as a parent is a more integrated existence. I don’t want us to only spend time with our son doing activities catered to children. And when we do go places not catered to children, I want him to be welcomed. And it is our responsibility to teach him how to behave differently in different environments. That being said, I know not everyone wants this integration.

One thing I hear (and long for) from friends, etc. about some other countries (esp those with more social support for families) is that it’s normal to integrate children into all aspects of life. In fact, one friend whose wife worked for a government agency in Iceland sometimes brought the baby to meetings where the baby would be passed around and bounced on various knees. And it was normal, both for the child to exist in that space and for others to share the burden/joy of caring for a child. Can you imagine this in America?

I could go on, but I want to focus back on art openings. I have the privilege of knowing fabulous artists and try to attend as many events as I can. Art openings tend to be in the evenings, so we can attend on the early side and get back for bedtime. It is free, gives us a chance to support the arts, allows us time in the heart of the city, builds and maintains relationships in our community, and allows our son the chance to both be curious about what he sees and learn to interact in a new space. And if we’re lucky, people will engage with him, hold him, talk about the art with him. Is it just me, or does this sound perfectly dreamy? If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to try. DM for courage/suggestions.

This exhibition, Common Ground 02, is open until March 31 at 312 2nd Ave South.

Fellow Earthlings, I have a painting in the next Common Ground group show! Opens to the public on Feb 01. Our reception is Friday, Feb 02, 6-10pm! Come through, I’d love to see you!

I.L.019, 2024 *SOLD*
Acrylic (on cradled gessobord)
36” x 48” x 2” + natural wood frame

This painting was influenced by my “Imaginary Landscape” series, which I started Jan. 01, 2021 as a nightly ritual to help me process my day, a “pandemic project” if you will. I would invent places and draw them from my mind on a postcard sized paper with markers. For me these drawings became an expression of a landscape just as much as an emotional portrait. Revisiting this concept on a larger scale, with a different medium and headspace was truly cathartic and a lot of fun!

I feel genuinely excited and supported to be dipping my toe back into the exhibiting scene after many years of just making art and contemplating what showing means to me, especially within this city. Stay tuned as I look for more opportunities to share and sell my work.

Gallery Address:
312 2nd Ave S
Seattle, WA 98104

Gallery Hours:
Open Friday-Sunday every weekend of February & March.

Thank you to @graysonrichter & @jacob.shumaker for curating Common Ground. It feels good to be sharing the space with so many local artists.

We are thrilled to present our inaugural Winter Salon exhibition, opening this Thursday, December 5th for Art Walk. Including more than 60 works by 28 artists, the Salon aims to present art as accessible, necessary and for everyone. With full, salon style walls and a diverse array of artwork, the exhibition encourages the acquisition of works of art for both established collectors and established admirers, with the majority of works available for less than $1,000, and some original works as low as $60.
