Whole City Throwin’ 4’s.

The 704 has been throwing up 4’s forever. We worked with @charlottefootball and @lute_west9 to make it a moment in-stadium at home games. The 49ers tapped into Charlotte culture for a high-energy moment bigger than football.

Day 4 with @ckennedyjr

Last November, I had the opportunity to travel to Charlotte to lens @lunchboxshortfilm written & directed by @romeookwara and @seanbeezy.

We had the unique opportunity to use @fujifilmproduction @fujifilmx_us GFX Eterna 55 prior to its commercial release. This was my first opportunity to be an early user of camera tech. I learned a lot on this production about myself and I want to share a few of those lessons:

1. You are enough.

When you have good people on your team, who are also excellent at what they do, you really don’t need to step into that situation and try to do too much. The key is to put your people in positions to do their best, and show up as your authentic self. Your crew will go to bat for you when they know you have their back as well.

2. Honor the story and everything else will take care of itself.

The original plan was to shoot this on 35mm film, which would’ve honored the nostalgia of the story but presented a litany of challenges. Using Eterna was the best of both worlds because it allowed us to be free with camera movement but still gave us that nostalgic feeling we were after. Those moments on the football field/basketball court don’t land the same way if we don’t have the camera right in the middle of the action running alongside the kids. Eterna served us beautifully and we utilized it perfectly.

3. Trust your work.

The opportunities and collaborators that come to you aren’t by chance. It’s because you did the work, and your work spoke to the right people. Trust that and the work you’ve put in. Even though I was doing new things in a new environment, nothing felt overwhelming because I knew I put in the work on my craft and my mind.

I’m forever grateful for this opportunity. I feel that these are the kinds of projects that come around that help shape your mindset around where you are and where you can go. The ones that remind you of the things about yourself as a cinematographer and as a person that you may forget through the rigors of the grind.

Let me know if these lessons resonate with anyone. Also, feel free to ask any technical questions about my experience with Eterna!
