Well I wanted to jump in on the #top5musealbums challenge set forth by @patterns_in_time. I love #muserecords and favorites are constantly in rotation. Here are my current top 5 burning up the #turntable lately:
-
-
Carlos Garnett/Black Love
Woody Shaw/Little Red’s Fantasy
Buster Williams/Heartbeat
Linc Chamberland/A Place Within
Catalyst/A Tear And A Smile

This one was tougher than I thought it was going to be. @patterns_in_time set this challenge of everyone’s #top5musealbums last night and I’ve been listening to the meagre amount of #muserecords I actually own. Or so I thought. It’s a deceiving label in that they keep turning up on my shelf “oh shit yeah, that one too…” etc. etc.

So I whittled it down to my fave five that I possess. I’m missing some total smokers however. There’s no Moontrane, Night of the MKVII, no Buster Williams. No fucking Catalyst (one of the biggest misses of my collecting career there), I could go on. I’ve also only brought in Muse only titles - not reissues from Cobblestone (crazy I know - but it didn’t feel right). So here they are:

#roybrooks The Free Slave:
For the title track alone this record is number 1.

#joechambers The Almovorid:
Deep one. Used to be a £30 record. Now… it’s not.
Rhythm conscious playing with a touch of electricity thrown in. Special. Mines a promo too. Nooch.

#haroldland Xocia’s Dance:
Nice to see this getting g the recognition it truly deserves. Post-bop spiritual brilliance from and Harold and Bobby. A thing of beauty.

#thevisitors Motherland:
You just have to have one in there. My fave is Neptune but mines on Cobblestone so I’ll go for the equally as good Motherland. Earl and Carl Grubbs for the win on the fire records they released. I’m still missing In my Youth… which rankles.

#patmartino Consciousness:
So it seems Live is very popular. I’ve obviously missed out there. Consciousness though is also awesome. Starts of post-bop, then Latin, then all out with some sonic whistling. Fucking bring that on!

In just gonna say. Somebody…. Please reissue these records. They are stunning. I didn’t get to Richard Davis, Carlos Garnett - heck Willis Jackson Headed and Gutted is also phenomenal. Peace out. #jazz #vinyl #vinylcommunity #oneyearcovered

I am a huge fan of Muse Records and their output, and when I saw @patterns_in_time start. New challenge, which frankly is long overdue, #top5musealbums I had to jump on quickly.
I admit that it’s a bit hard to do this challenge since I don’t have a few of my top Muse albums, most notably Joe Chambers The Almoravid which would probably take the top spot, but most of what I have is pretty securely top material, almost all Post Bop/Modal/Spiritual.
- The album that really got me to go down the muse rabbit hole is Woody Shaw - Little Red’s Fantasy, for which reason it will always be in my top 5, but Woody Shaw has some beautiful output on the label!
- Albert Heath - Kwanza is one of the greatly underrated spiritual jazz album of the 70’s and definitely deserves high praise, despite randomly poor pressing quality.
- The Visitors - In My Youth is my favorite of theirs personally, absolutely beautiful album, they are cousins of John Coltrane’s first wife I believe and are heavily influenced by him! Top rank post-Coltrane Spiritual stuff.
- Joe Bonner - Angel Eyes is one that absolutely blew me away when I first heard it and doesn’t get very much attention (I think part of the problem is the very bland cover) in a record store it’s one I’d ignore for the cover but that’s a huge mistake. Billy Harper, Leroy Jenkins, Linda Sharrock, Juni Booth, Joe Bonner. Really deep spiritual album, I know I overuse the term spiritual but I really don’t care, to me it most definitely is.
- the one slightly different album on here is somewhat in the Jazz-Funk vein, Walter Bishop Jr. - Cubicle, absolutely love this album, possibly my favorite version of Summertime (literally impossible to claim a favorite), valley Land is killer and features vocals.
I absolutely love Muse, and hope to see more entires in this challenge! Maybe there are a few titles I haven’t heard of that I can discover! #top5musealbums #muserecords #spiritualjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzvinylcollector #jazzvinylcollection #jazzvinylcommunity #jazzvinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #vinylshopping #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinylcollectors #vinylcollecting #vinylrecords #vinyljunkie #vinylgram #instavinyl #recordcommunity

This Garrard 301 is going to it’s new forever home!
Amazingly, Nick will be the second owner of this Cream, Grease Bearing deck!
Thanks to @efm_vii for helping me tune it up and get it ready for delivery! I suspect Nick will be talking to Matthew @audio_grail about one of his incredible plinths at some point! Something I highly recommend!

Mostly black! I thought about trying a wall of entirely black sleeves, but it would have been extremely small, so mostly black they are… kept it to two pages, hadn’t noticed how popular a sleeve choice it is…
