“The Mystery of the Annunciation”

Today’s mystery invites us into the beautiful reality that God meets us in the middle of our “everyday.” Patty Wickman (@pattywickman), in her symbolically powerful painting “Overshadowed,” offers layers of meaning and visual cues worth meditating on–where the Divine meets us even in the ordinary.

Let us hold gratitude for God meeting us, wherever we are.

YOURE INVITED! Enrich your life by joining us TOMORROW at 12 NOON at the Fredrick R. Weisman Museum to listen to distinguished artists: Patty Wickman @pattywickman and Tim Hawkinson @inkdripdrawings.

Wickman paints representational images that investigate the role of spirituality in contemporary life. Intellectually complex and rigorous, her metaphorical images are layered with symbolism and allegorical implications. Wickman's work explores the intersection of the natural and the supernatural, the epic and the everyday, and collapses the distance between vision and visionary.

Wickman is a professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Tim Hawkinson's idiosyncratic creations are meditations on nature, machines, mortality, the body and human consciousness. His inventive works range in size from monumental kinetic and sound-producing sculptures to almost microscopic pieces created from such unassuming materials as fingernail clippings and eggshells.

Hawkinson has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Getty Museum, the Whitney Biennial, and the 2003 Corcoran Biennial in Washington, D.C., among others.

The Weisman Museum invites you to a gallery talk with artists Tim Hawkinson and Patty Wickman, whose work is currently exhibited as part of the Bridge Projects exhibition "To Bough and To Bend."

Details: January 25, 12 PM

Tim Hawkinson’s idiosyncratic creations are meditations on nature, machines, mortality, the body and human consciousness. Since the 1980s, he has used common, found, and store-bought materials, as well as handcrafted objects and machines, to shift familiar subject matter into an unfamiliar place with off-kilter visual conundrums and conceits imbued with deeper meaning. His inventive works range in size from monumental kinetic and sound-producing sculptures to almost microscopic pieces created from such unassuming materials as fingernail clippings and eggshells. Driven by ideas, materials, and an interest in transformation, Hawkinson continues to create unlikely and thought-provoking associations by transforming common materials into works of art.

Patty Wickman, professor of Painting and Drawing at UCLA, creates works that are abundant not only in the visually lush scenes the artist renders, but also in the spiritual meaning and art historical references that radiate from them. The artist’s images of everyday domestic scenes are layered with finely articulated graphite drawing and a range of gestural to more highly resolved paint applications of thoughtfully positioned figures, objects, and landscapes that link to historical or religious imagery.

Featured works: Tim Hawkinson, Sebastian, 2015.
