The Art of “Marahan” 2/2

4. TELA AS A DRAMATIC DEVICE
- The art department made a research of a specific object that would summarize the whole production design. We decided on using “TELA”. “TELA” as a dramatic device to portray the mother, the three generations, the complex memories, and the relationship of the mother and the son. “TELA” is being used in healing and comfort. “TELA” is a love language of the mother towards her son.

This has been a life changing journey. All made possible through Jesus Christ. Noong anxious ako, Christ made me remember how He created the whole universe. Easy, beautiful, and free. It became my firm foundation. Kasama ko ang may gawa ng universe. Salamat, Lord.

The Art of “Marahan” - Production Design and World Building 1/2

As the Production Designer of the film, I went through so many research about grief and Filpino mother and son relationships to come up with the concept and design. Below is the brief explanation of the design 💕

Main Concept: Duplicity

1. THE GRIEF IS DENIAL
- Mark, the lead character, is currently on a stage of denial. He couldn’t accept the death of his mother and He kept on replaying the memories of the past. The design of each sequence is complex. It is a mixture of reality, memories, feelings, and the edited memory of Mark. Denial as grief is crucial. Mark tends to mix the reality with fiction. Through design, denial was shown through colors, transformation, and formation of furnitures. It is a mixture of joy and brokenness, funeral, and celebration. Everything’s colorful until He finally goes through acceptance where the color is all blue.

2. THE HOUSE IS THE MOTHER
- The director wanted that the house is an extension of the mother. The director also noted that the character of the mother is from the POV of her son, Mark. The art department designated specific traits of the mother per room and per sequence. The color would represent the distinct characteristic of the mother.

3. A COMBINED MEMORIES OF THREE GENERATIONS
- In the film, Mark exists in 3 generations — the present, the teen, and the child. The art department studied the character’s psychology of each generation of Mark. What are their common denominators? What are their differences? Through the design, the dominant generation of the specific sequence is seen. It is done through colors, wardrobe, make-up, props, and arrangement of furnitures. The present Mark — destruction, the teen Mark — anger, and the young mark — love. The wardrobe of the mother remains red. This signifies her persona in different generations of Mark. Colors of the wardrobe would signify the psychological status of the different Mark and their relationship with their Mother.
