‘Configurations’ is a group exhibition featuring ten artists who practices engage with themes of assembly and perception, that is, the act of seeing beyond the direct line of sight: focusing on the edges, the initially unseen, and the subtleties of the act of looking and discovery. Curated by Linda Khatri and Jo Lewis, the exhibition includes works that continue to reveal themselves as the viewer shifts their line of vision. The works together celebrate the joy of looking in their elements of surprise, subversion, and revelation. Exploring how this awareness manifests across diverse practices lies at the heart of the exhibition and defines its spirit.

CAMBERWELL OPEN STUDIOS TOMORROW

Camberwell artists create work in extraordinary places, from converted bus garages to garden sheds. Our annual Open Studios weekend provides an opportunity to visit local artists in their studio, purchase original art and even commission your own. Entry is free and all studios are open from 12–6pm Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise indicated.

Paul Ashurst has shown his paintings nationally and internationally for many years. His work has been consistently changing in subject and scale, but at present he is working on small abstract paintings on paper.

You can find Paul at his studio on Flaxman Road for the Camberwell Open Studios 17th + 18th June 2023, which handily also hosts his piece for the “Not for Sale” exhibition.

One the very few that has a rectangle in it as almost everything I paint is with squares in a square format, as I think that squares are the most stable visual form available. Paintings for me should be static and show stability- The fluorescent colour for me expresses an upbeat hopeful quality-as we are surrounded by a chaotic world I want my paintings to contrast that with a calm and positive temperament."
