I’m not sure how Dave—who spent over 20 years in the Army—made it to his age without a tattoo, but that all changed yesterday. At 62, he got his first tattoo. I say “first” deliberately—I have a feeling he’s going to become a repeat customer of Paul Wiley.

Dave has been talking about getting a tattoo for at least a decade, but it never made it past the “I’m thinking about it” phase…until Paul Wiley and I connected on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with Paul’s work—it was unlike anything I’d seen. I showed it to Dave, and seconds later—after ten years of talking, we were in Paul’s DMs.

Since Paul lives in Spain, we figured we’d eventually plan a trip and schedule time with him while on vacation. But as luck would have it, Paul travels to the U.S., and we were able to snag an appointment in Chicago.

I packed my laptop, thinking I’d get some work done while Paul worked on Dave—but instead, we talked for four and a half hours. It was the kind of conversation that felt like a hug.

Paul’s extensive background in design is evident in his work, and I think it suits Dave down to the ground. More importantly, Dave does too.

Just to help gain a little perspective, I'd like to explain what I'm doing over here in Portugal for those of you who are interested.

Lewis is the creator and artist of Black Symmetry. His work is purely geometric and involves heavy coverage- particularly near to full body suits of tattoo work. He came at a time in the industry when geometric work was new and being discovered by a select few artists- in a very real way, it still is. Throughout his career, because of his focus and organizational skills, he created a highly efficient technique as well as business strategy which has made him one of the most, if not the most, leading sole geometric artist of our time.

Today, I am one of ten artists from around the world who he selected to participate in his very first program where he has developed an intensive three day workshop to pass on his skills and share his knowledge. While I am not the oldest of the group, I have been tattooing the longest. Lewis was quick to point this out to the group and has so kindly encouraged me to contribute and share my own knowledge alongside him. The artists amongst us are from Switzerland, Germany, London, Philly, Barcelona, Portugal, Paris, NY as well as the Portugese Islands.. and now the Oregon coast 😉

Most of you know I have a heavy foundation in American traditional as well as geometric patternwork. I'm also coming up close on 20 years of tattooing and every year I make a special effort to make new goals and fine tune what direction I want to pursue the following year. I don't think I'll ever abandon illustrative designs, like panthers, wolves, dragons, serpents, mermaids, ships and so on. I would like to do more ornamental and geometric full body work for men and for women. To be honest, both make me happy.

I feel very humbled and fortunate to be where I'm at now and to have the experience I do. I want to utilize the decades I have left to make the most of not only my skillsets but also my vision of what is possible for my own well being, my clients and my community.

Thank you for listening.

It’s been a long time coming to get some new ink! I’ve watched @paulwileystudio work for a while and messaged and said if you ever make it to Perth, let me know. As soon as Paul said he was coming I booked and paid a deposit! His work is brilliant. Now I want matching sleeves. So happy with the outcome and what a fun session with many laughs!

This tattoo was a rework and an add-on. I completely reworked the Fleur-Di-Lis then added the heart and crown to fill out the shoulder more. My client had @paulwileystudio design the add-on. Thank you for allowing me to tattoo your design. And, thank you both for trusting me to do a great job!! *
