What makes a champion?

When you’re faced with a bad round, it’s easy to pack it in and call it a day. It’s easy to quit. It’s not easy to double down.

That was the story of this weekend.

A first round plagued with hazards, bad breaks, bad calls, winter rust from not being on a course all winter — and not to mention the heat. A blistering 33°C in direct sun all day. Not exactly ideal conditions for a Canadian.

But instead of making excuses, we reviewed the round. We looked at where the strokes were added and went to work.

We adjusted.

A more conservative strategy. Pulling 3 wood instead of driver on many holes. Playing to key numbers to create scoring opportunities instead of forcing hero shots.

And most importantly — we chipped. Over and over again.

Penny is naturally a bump-and-run player, but these weren’t bump-and-run greens like our bent grass back home. We had to adapt.

What’s your attitude when you’re scoring one of the worst rounds you’ve had?

I can tell you Penny’s.

“It’s okay, I got this.”
“I can get up and down from there”
“I can sink this”

That’s what she told me shot after shot, that’s the mindset that kept her going. Late in the first round she started to find her stride, even while still posting her worst score.

Then the next day?

Those adjustments turned a +13 round into an even par round, a 13 stroke difference.

She didn’t let the heat, the bad breaks, or the rough start define her weekend. She just needed another day on the course to adjust.

That’s what champions do.

They don’t quit when things get hard.

They adapt. They learn. They go back to work. And that’s exactly what Penny did.

Thanks for a wonderful weekend. It was great meeting new friends, and thanks to all the volunteers and organizers.

A little behind-the-scenes look at how Penny plans her practice.

She mixes it up throughout the week to work on her full game and keep building in every area.

As always, a huge thank you to Team Penny for all the support ❤️

Elopement in Venice in winter may or may not give you a cold, but it’ll definitely gives you fantastic lights & no tourist scenery that is only yours 🌅
Loved shooting this for @lore_lujan & @paz.nar
