As we close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating highlights from our bus wrap to community events!

Thank you to everyone who joined the Young Friends of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County for Cocktails in Paradise: A Stroll Through The Royal on October 8!

With more than 160 guests joining us throughout the evening, it was a wonderful night of connection, cocktails, and exclusive experiences.

Historic preservation doesn’t end when a project is completed. Nearly 20 years after REG Architects helped restore the iconic 1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse, the work of preserving this historic landmark continues.

Today, the building’s original wood-framed windows are undergoing careful and meticulous restoration to preserve their historic character for generations to come.

As Rick explains, that’s what historic preservation is all about: honoring the past while protecting it for the future!

Part 4/13: The Phipps Legacy - Palm Beach's Invisible Architects

Before Palm Beach became the island we know today, its coastline was shaped by an unexpected force: the steel mills of Pittsburgh.

When Henry Phipps Jr. - financial genius behind Andrew Carnegie’s steel empire - retired after the 1901 sale of Carnegie Steel, his family brought a massive vision south. Through Bessemer Properties, the Phipps family didn’t just buy land; they looked at South Florida as a canvas for multi-generational stewardship.

When severe hurricanes battered the island in the 1920s, the Phipps's didn't retreat. Instead, they worked with the town to move Ocean Boulevard inland, a master engineering move that stabilized the shoreline and gave birth to Palm Beach’s signature ocean-to-lake estate compounds. Years later, they dredged Lake Worth Lagoon to create Ibis Isle, further shaping the physical map of the island.

Yet for all their real estate ambition, their greatest gift was knowing when to protect the land. They donated prime coastal acreage to create Phipps Ocean Park, ensuring the public would always have access to the island’s natural beauty. Today, as the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach executes a multi-million-dollar revitalization of that very park, restoring native coastal dunes and protecting the historic 1886 Little Red Schoolhouse, the Phipps legacy comes full circle.

The Phipps family proved that true real estate value isn't built overnight. It is forged through long-term vision, infrastructure, and a deep respect for preservation—the same principles that continue to define the island’s most exclusive footprint today. 🏛️🌴
