My kids and friends made it to the top of Mt. Whitney yesterday! I’m so stinkin proud of the bravery, determination and adventure in all of their spirits! I’m in awe! Such a great experience! For the curious mind that has ever wanted to see what it actually looks like from up there…I’ve included some killer shots they took. Cheers to these wonderful humans! #mtwhitneysummit 2026

The Great Wall of LA is a ⭐️ lesson in my Humanities / Composition classroom. My students walk over and choose 1/85 panels to research & write about - it is a “problem identifier + visual literacy” exercise. On one such field trip I met Judith Baca five years ago and became a docent for The Great Wall of LA”. It was a defining moment.

There was a time when I felt I didn’t quite belong. I often felt displaced, unsure of where my voice fit. That began to change when I started working with SPARC as a docent at the Great Wall of Los Angeles.

Standing with students along the wall, I would explain that the mural tells the stories of marginalized communities, people whose histories are often missing from traditional textbooks. I would tell them that these stories matter because they are part of this land, part of our shared history, and part of what built this country.

And somewhere along the way, while telling those stories to others, something shifted inside me. I felt empowered. I no longer felt alienated or out of place.

I realized that I belong here too.

Proud to watch the performance & then to write about it.

Happy Birthday to cousin David. He is the oldest cousin, first born grand child. He is one of the nicest humans you will ever meet. Thankful I got to spend some time with him on his special day.

Today marks a significant moment in the history of the Great Wall of LA. Four decades ago, amidst the raw forces of nature, a remarkable story of courage unfolded. Bea Plessner Rulli, now Director of the Great Wall of LA Institute, found herself facing an unexpected twist of fate.
In the midst of a relentless flash flood, Bea, alongside her team
members Robert Martinez, Hector Martinez, Priscilla Rouse, and Kelly Watts, were
evacuating the area to protect the kids that were working on the mural and save
the equipment. Bea was swept away at an astonishing 35 miles per hour and later
rescued by an LA Fire Department rescue team.
Her story embodies the true spirit of
leadership and courage—qualities that continue to guide her as the Director of
the Great Wall of LA Institute.
