One-on-one with Dave Hammer this morning — the man who leads @pimco_global's municipal bond portfolio management.

The takeaway: 5–10 year munis with some credit exposure is the sweet spot right now. Ten-year muni-to-Treasury ratios have moved from ~62% to 75–80%. The after-tax edge of AA munis over AA corporates: 150–175 basis points, near decade wides.

Tax-exempt income at these levels. Why wait for the all-clear?

Unrelentingly committed. It's a lifestyle. Not a slogan.

People ask what "fiduciary" actually means.

Here's my version:

I have kids. I know what it feels like to be responsible for someone else's future.

That's the standard I hold myself to with every family we serve.

Your interests first. Always. No exceptions, no fine print.

It's not a marketing word. It's how I'd want someone to treat my family.

The average NFL career lasts 3.3 years. The money it produces has to last 50 more.

The research is sobering: 78% of NFL players face financial distress within two years of retirement. 60% of NBA players within five. And according to NBER research, the stars go bankrupt at the same rate as everyone else — earnings don’t protect you, decisions do.

It’s rarely about the money. It’s about compressed timelines, unvetted “opportunities,” lifestyle inflation, and advice from the wrong people.

InvestedAthlete® was built for exactly this: institutional-caliber wealth management for athletes whose earning window is short but whose financial life is long.Talent earns it. Discipline keeps it.

There’s a quieter way to win — and it compounds.

Strong returns feel great. Strong returns with less risk? That’s the goal worth chasing. It means owning more of the market, not just the 10 biggest names everyone’s crowded into.

Less concentration. Longer view. Steadier hands.

That’s the difference between investing and speculating — and it’s the difference that builds real, lasting wealth.

Standing in front of Ellsworth Kelly’s Red on Red at San Francisco MOMA.

Two red panels. That’s it.

Your first instinct might be: I could do that.

You couldn’t.

I think about this when constructing a client portfolio.

The strongest portfolios rarely look complicated. They aren’t built to impress with volume or complexity. They’re a deliberate set of well-considered positions — sized with intention, structured around how a specific individual and family actually experience risk, and designed to hold steady when markets test conviction.

Complexity is easy to manufacture. Clarity is hard to earn.

After 25 years in this work, I’ve found the portfolios that endure share something with this painting: every element is purposeful, nothing is there to decorate, and the simplicity is the product of significant thought rather than the absence of it.

Great work doesn’t have to look complex. It has to be right.

Simple. Deliberate. Earned.

Most investors have it backwards. They add money when markets feel safe — near highs — and freeze when prices actually go on sale.

Dollar cost averaging flips that instinct. The same contribution buys more shares at lower prices, which means falling markets are when your long-term wealth accumulation does its best work.

So if or when fear sets in and markets retreat, let that be your call to action. Not a reason to run — a reason to add.

The S&P 500 owns 500 companies. It just doesn’t own them equally — the 10 largest drive over 40% of its daily movement, while the other 490 are mostly along for the ride.

Meanwhile, the math of losing never changes: a 50% loss requires a 100% gain just to break even.

And every bull market in history has followed the same arc — born on pessimism, ending in euphoria. Euphoria has a way of arriving quietly, dressed as confidence.

None of this is a reason to sell. It’s a reason to stay disciplined: know what you actually own, manage downside risk first, and let compounding do its work.

As this epic trip to Antarctica comes to a close… I keep thinking how rare it is to have something actually live up to the hype—and this one exceeded it.

7th continent checked ✅

One of the toughest races I’ve ever done—snow, wind, hills, and a course that just never let up. Came in injured, wasn’t sure how it would go, but found a way to push through and finish 2nd overall.

As rewarding as that was, the race almost feels secondary.

The real part was the journey getting here and sharing it with a great group of friends. And honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of every one of them. This wasn’t an easy day out there—just finishing this course took grit, toughness, and a mindset that most people don’t have. Everyone showed up and found a way.

And the penguins… zero crowd support. No clapping, no cheering—just standing there in tuxedos like they were judging our pacing strategy and wondering why we didn’t just slide on our stomachs like they do.

That’s what I’ll remember most.

Grateful for this one.
