Happy Sunday guys!

I am a bit late for saying Happy Halloween but you get the memo when I mean I am always late to such parties! 👻🎃

So this week was my last week in Clinical Trials and I am so thrilled by the experience I had. I have focused on both oncology and non-oncology clinical trials and had the opportunity to set a Phase 1 study up at our hospital ✍📁. Phase 1 aka 'First in Human' studies are extremely important as this is where theories that have worked in Labs are proven to either work or not. Many studies have failed at this point and as disheartening as that sounds, its also a major safety checkpoint for a medicine to get to the licensing stage. Its a stage which is also known as dose-finding and safety studies.

📢 Fun-fact ➡️ Phase 1 studies tend to be carried out in healthy volunteers, because the ultimate aim is to investigate safety of the study drug and also suss out what doses can be effective vs what can cause toxicity. In oncology studies, its unethical for a potentially cytotoxic drug to be administered to healthy individuals and hence we use volunteers with the disease in whom other treatments have been exhausted.

Remember the therapeutic window we learnt about at Uni? Well, this is where the building blocks come from! So its a time in the study drug life-cycle which is nerve-wracking and exciting for researchers and healthcare professionals. We all want out patient's to get the benefit of a drug that can or could make a difference and I cannot believe that I got to be a part of helping set it up! 👩‍⚕️🤝🧕

Sometimes I have to pinch myself to ensure that the job I have is not a dream. My job as a junior rotational pharmacist has been so varied so far and I have not only had the opportunity to contribute to patient care but also learned so much on the way. Not many jobs allow you to focus on self development and I feel so blessed to be able to do so. Alhamdulilah! 🙏

👉 Would you like to know more about clinical trials and the role of the pharmacist?? Let me know in the comments or DM me and can create more specific posts!

Thanks for reading! X

When we started this journey it was literally just two pharmacists Stephen Foster and Asim Mirza discovering what they could do to help a couple of struggling GP Practices.
4 years later, here we are. A growing team of fabulous #pharmacists, #pharmacytechnicians, an operations team, a #GPworkflow hub and more.
Onwards and upwards
