🚨 BREAKING: Pro-Israel groups successfully lobbied the British Museum to remove references to Palestine

Despite the Museum and Director Nicholas Cullinan claiming that they have not removed mention of Palestine from their labels and that they were not aware of correspondence with UK Lawyers for Israel, a new investigation by @middleeasteye reveals that Cullinan received the letter, implemented internal changes, and then proceeded to mislead prominent critics, including @williamdalrymple

Cullinan and the Museum’s continued deception of their staff and the general public makes a mockery of the pretence that the British Museum is in any way impartial or apolitical.

The erasure of Palestinian history is part of a track record of the Museum’s continued complicity in Israel’s genocide and systematic destruction of Palestinian culture and history. In 2025, the British Museum deceived their staff and hosted the Israeli embassy’s Nakba party. The Museum also continues to provide cultural cover for British Petroleum, a company that provides Israel with 40% of its oil to fuel both the genocide in Gaza and climate breakdown.

Everytime Cullinan and the Museum have attempted to censor and hide their complicity, we have exposed them. We have disrupted genocide galas and billionaire balls. We will not stop until our demands are met.

😡 PCS union members working for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are protesting the huge job cuts and austerity they are facing in their Departments. All across Whitehall we are seeing a wave of austerity and with this weeks announcement that yet again climate and environment will bear the brunt of more cuts to fund war, PCS members are fighting back.

📣 Come and join them to tell Ed Miliband and the government to end the climate and environmental austerity and create a wave of good green jobs locally and across the economy to tackle the emergency we are in.

ℹ️ The rally starts at 13:00 on Wednesday outside DEFRA’s London HQ and then will proceed to march down Whitehall for a closing rally outside DESNZ’s office at 55 Whitehall.

On Monday evening, we launched our new zine “Partners in Loot: BP and the British Museum, Past, Present and Future” and were joined by incredible panellists, including Hannah David from @pcsculturegroup , Allan Struthers from @artistscultureworkersldn , author of the Brutish Museums @profdanhicks and Oriane Bui from @lsesusjp

We explored our new zine uncovering BP and the British Museum’s shared history of colonial plunder and their present partnership in service of imperialist genocide and ecological destruction. We also spoke about what the complete transformation and democratisation of the British Museum could look like, staring with the £50 million partnership.

Join us for the launch of our new zine ‘Partners in Loot: The British Museum and BP in Past, Present and Future’ at 7pm on Monday, 23 February, at Reference Point, WC2R 3DA London.

‘Partners in Loot: The British Museum and BP in Past, Present and Future’ investigates the two institutions’ shared history of colonial plunder, and their present partnership in service of imperialist genocide and ecological destruction. The zine puts forward our case for the complete transformation and democratisation of the colonial institution, starting with the £50 million BP partnership.

We’ll be in conversation with cultural workers and organisers, diving into the history and political significance of the BP partnership, and exploring the role of cultural workers and institutions in both upholding and resisting the status quo.
