After seven years as an SLP, one thing I’ve learned is that there isn’t one “perfect” personality for this career.

Being curious, flexible, willing to celebrate small wins, and open to continued learning can help you decide whether this path feels right for you. You do not need to check every box. These are simply a few things to think about before committing.

Does playtime sometimes start to feel like a quiz? 👀

“What color is it?” “What’s that?” “What does it say?”

Questions have a place, but try balancing them with language modeling too. 🤍 Instead of only asking your child to tell you what they see, describe it for them: “It’s a gray cat. He has flowers. The flowers are blue.”

You’re giving them meaningful language to hear during an interaction, without requiring an answer every time. 🗣️✨

A lot of us grew up hearing things like: “Just take one bite.” “You can’t leave until you finish.” “If they’re hungry, they’ll eat.”

But research and clinical experience continue to show us that pressure around food often increases stress, anxiety, refusal behaviors, and rigidity around eating.

In feeding therapy, our goal is not compliance. Our goal is safety, trust, skill development, and positive experiences with food.

What we do instead: ✨ Reduce pressure ✨ Build predictable mealtime routines ✨ Support autonomy ✨ Use food chaining / gradual exposure ✨ Encourage interaction before expectation ✨ Respect sensory + motor differences ✨ Coach caregivers, not blame them

Pressure may create compliance in the moment… but not confidence with food. (Gotta play the long game)
