Happy First Gen Friday! Meet Aileen Mendieta, a third-year student at JMU majoring in Health Sciences with a Pre-PA minor! Aileen is the VP for Grupo Candela. She is also involved in the Latinx Student Alliance, Phi Epsilon Kappa, and is a Centennial Scholar. Aileen’s favorite spot on campus is the quad, especially when it’s warm out! Swipe or read below to learn more about Aileen’s first-gen story.

1. Being first-generation has made me resilient and responsible. As the oldest of three, with siblings who are 4 and 13, I know they are watching the choices I make. That motivates me to push through challenges and set an example for what is possible. Growing up, I often had to figure things out on my own and help my family navigate unfamiliar systems. Those experiences taught me independence, perseverance, and the importance of creating opportunities not just for myself, but for those who come after me.
2. Like many first-generation students, I had to figure out the college process on my own. One of the hardest parts was learning how to navigate the opportunities college offers, especially studying abroad. Things like applications, financial aid, and finding programs were completely unfamiliar to my family. I spent time researching scholarships, programs, and deadlines because I knew I wanted to see more of the world. Through persistence, I’ve been able to study abroad in four countries, and this summer it will be six.
3. Being first-generation often means being the one figuring things out first. It means learning how college works while also explaining it to my family at the same time. I’ve had to navigate applications, financial aid, and opportunities that were unfamiliar to my parents, and then bring that knowledge back home. As the oldest of three, I know my younger siblings are watching the path I create. For me, being first-generation means turning uncertainty into opportunity for my family and those who will come after me. #jmufirstgen #firstgen #celebratefirstgen
