Before the First Bite
What happens before the first bite?

Can the shape of a plate change taste? Can electricity make food seem saltier without adding salt? How will we eat without plastic, meat or gravity? Through 33 projects, Before the First Bite at Zagreb Design Week explores how design shapes eating before food reaches the mouth. Taste is influenced by sight, touch, sound, expectations and the objects we use. Curated by Tina Marković, six tables explore perception, accessibility, culture, sustainability, experimentation and the future of food.

Zero Waste
The fourth table addresses waste. Notpla develops seaweed-based packaging, while Ines Vlahović’s The Seaweed Wrap combines seaweed and paper for food delivery. Cupffee produces edible wafer cups, and Biotrem transforms wheat bran into biodegradable tableware. Together, they ask: does packaging need to become waste?

Play and Friction
The fifth table connects with this year’s theme — Friction. Peleg Design’s Egguins turns boiling eggs into a playful ritual. Katerina Kamprani’s The Uncomfortable makes familiar objects impractical, revealing the intelligence hidden in everyday design. Ema Gerovac Nogolica’s Žvig glass cannot be put down while full. Bag Disseny Studio’s Ballarina cup combines heat protection and lid, while Roxanne Brennen’s Dining Toys explores food, pleasure and freedom from table conventions.

The Future of Food
The final table looks ahead. The Center for Genomic Gastronomy’s Smog Tasting uses polluted air in biscuits. Klinta Locmele’s Zero develops tableware for microgravity, Chloe Rutzerveld’s Broiler Insects explores insects as future protein, and Malu Luecking’s Landless Food investigates growing food without soil. Fraunhofer CeRRI’s Food Fictions imagines future food systems, while Carolien Niebling rethinks the sausage through new ingredients and less meat.

Together, they show that the table is a place of ritual, culture and memory.

Some people are easy to buy for. They just happen to run on tea or coffee.

Charlie has done the hard part.

Inside this guide you’ll find a few favourites for slow mornings, strong coffee, proper brews and people who appreciate good design as much as a good cup.

This is only the first pour. There are plenty more clever finds waiting in-store.

Charlie’s kitchen has a few permanent residents.

Some keep the sponge company. Some help with dinner. Some simply make ordinary moments a little less ordinary.

Thoughtful design deserves a place in everyday life. Not hidden away in a drawer.

I’ll introduce you when you come by.
