SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF TIPENE ARTISTS

TUKU celebrates Māori artistic excellence, identity and creativity. Through the generosity of established and emerging Māori artists, this kaupapa brings people together through toi while raising funds for TIPENE student artists to travel and collaborate with Indigenous artists and art schools, and grow their creative potential. Your support helps our tama experience new opportunities, strengthen their cultural identity and carry their learning forward for the next generation.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou ngā ringa rehe o Te Ao Toi 🐝

Rā Huia ki tēnei wahine taiea, ki tēnei wahine pukenga rau, ki tēnei tuawahine, ki a Alana | @ngatirehiaroia

She’s a Māori superwoman who is always putting in the mahi for her whanau, hapū, iwi and our iwi Māori nui tonu.

These whakaahua are from her swearing in ceremony as a Kaiwhakawā / Judge in the Māori Land Court at our marae in Te Tii, and the cover image won us the “Peoples Choice” at the NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year Awards 🥇

Shes a real one.

Tuia ki tērā, I’m stoked as to once again be a finalist in the @nzgeo Photographer of the Year awards. My portraits of @todd.couper and @te_atawhai_k are both finalists in the portrait division and are both in the running for people’s choice!

I’m even MORE stoked to be a finalist alongside my mates @ericaphotog @cornelltukes @joshua_mccormack @mykeyscott

Voting for the people’s choice award is open now (link in my bio) and we would love it if you can vote for our work and get it recognized as the people’s choice. Kei a koutou te mana!

Instructions: you have to scroll through the images and select your top 5 by clicking the heart button. Once you’ve selected your top 5, it will ask for your email address. Your vote is only counted after doing this step, just clicking the heart doesn’t count.

Once you’ve made your votes comment 📸📸📸 below and we’d be super grateful if you can tag your mates and share on your socials to get the word out there and encourage your friends and whānau to vote too!

If you are downtown in Tāmaki you can see our exhibition with all the finalists down by Britomart. It’s epic!

Kei a koutou te mana! Tēnā rā tātou katoa! Māori ki te Ao!

Britomart is home to bold and evocative public artworks, as well as an ever-changing array of temporary exhibitions.

Throughout the neighbourhood, we’re fortunate to hold work by many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading Māori artists. During Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), we wanted to take a moment to kōrero about the meaning behind each one 🌀

If you look closely, the details will do a lot of the talking: pūhoro (traditional flowing design pattern) that speaks to a connection with water, shooting water jets that echo the movements of pipi (shellfish), intentional palettes that merge sea and sky, and compositions that pay homage to whakapapa.

Swipe through for more information about each work, or head to the link in our bio ➡️

Waitī Waitā (formerly known as Skylid — we’re so sorry for the incorrect naming on the slide, and thank you to those who flagged it!) by Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu), 2026.

“The inspiration for this work here was actually the threshold [silver centre] and the transition of the Waihorotiu Stream [left side] to Te Waitematā [right side]. So, in effect, it’s actually a map. The designs are a little bit different either side to reflect the different behaviours of water — water in a stream as opposed to water in an ocean.

“So the detail for the design — the bigger part of the design is a pūhoro, which is closely connected to water. We use pūhoro on waka to talk about the frictionless motion through waka building and the science of that and we use pūhoro to talk about the ocean and water. And so we have used pūhoro here, to reflect about that direct connection to the water — both the stream that used to flow here (it still flows today, it’s just underground) and the Waitematā Harbour. The difference in the Waitematā Harbour design is that there is whakarare all the way through it, to recognise the disruption — first of all, the land reclamation out into the harbour, and then, of course, everything that is happening in the harbour as well. Just lots of different aspects to the water as a har

Today we think of the whakatauki Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua (I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed firmly on the past).

Waitangi is an important day to reflect and remind ourselves of our commitments both personally and as a studio to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We are very privileged to work with iwi, hapu and whanau across Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Tai Tokerau and Waikato on a range of projects

Join us tonight from 5:30 to hear from Resilio Studio director Jack Haldane-Willis and artist/designer Bernard Makoare (Pena) as they share insights into the Kaipātiki Playground and Reserve (formerly Parakai Recreation Reserve), designed in collaboration with Te Poari o Kaipātiki ki Kaipara.

This project was shaped by collaboration, co-governance, and co-design, with special thanks to artist Bernard Makoare and traditional play specialist Harko Brown for their invaluable contributions.

A huge thank you to @objectspace and @nzia_auckland for having us as part of this talk series!
