Tomorrow (World Quaker Day!) from 2-4pm, Marcelle will be sitting as elder for our group of 50+ Friends, hungry for a more embodied Quakerism. There’s still time to join us! Info at Pendlehill.org An experiential online workshop on World Quaker Day exploring body-based early Quaker practices. This online workshop explores a longing among contemporary Friends to revitalize the radically embodied culture of the early Quaker movement. We will begin with the briefest of historical introductions, describing the body-based practices of First-generation Friends (resources will be shared for further independent study). Then we will get down to the business of experimenting with current forms of Embodied Quakerism that reimagine old practices — like Quaker chanting, prayerful body positioning, and hands-on healing. After being guided through these practices, Friends will gather in small break-out groups to share their own corporeal experiences with Spirit, and/or encounters with other Quakers who might be discovering emergent forms of embodiment that bring something entirely new. Reconvening in the big group, we’ll have some time to exchange ideas and resources for deepening. We will close with a period of worship where together we commit to opening our whole selves to how Spirit might want to move through — not just in familiar ways, but perhaps in radically new/old ones. This morning‘s attempt to put some language to what The Center for Centering is and isn’t about. When Friends hear a call to return to the body as sacred within Quakerism, I have found they grow immediately nervous that the silence and stillness of their worship will be disturbed. In my experience - and in pretty much any other tradition with stillness at the heart of their practices - it’s the opposite. The more we understand our bodies, the more stillness we’re capable of, and the deeper we are able to go inside that stillness. Info on Sunday’s workshop can be found at pendlehill.org

This experiential workshop offers a taste of early forms of Quaker embodied practice that have long been suppressed within its tradition, but are beginning to re-emerge in contemporary contexts. Together, we will explore how our unique bodies want to open to greater liberty of Spirit in connecting to the Divine. Through individual, paired, and group practices, participants will experiment with embodied ways of preparing for worship, listening for guidance, offering spiritual nurture, and faithfully sharing messages. The afternoon will lay the groundwork for exploring the body-based practices of early Friends, not just in worship but also through hands-on healing, collective discernment among “Spiritual Companions,” and delivering messages through sound. Together we will experience the 50-minute sunset Skyspace opening, accompanied by a live crystal singing bowl sound bath. Greet the Light is a mesmerizing installation designed by Quaker light artist James Turrell, which challenges our perception of light, color, and space with cove lighting timed to correlate to the changing colors of the sky, perceived through an aperture in the ceiling. The workshop will conclude with a closing circle in which participants can share their longings for how to deepen this work, especially at the Easter Weekend Retreat at Pendle Hill, “Becoming New.” Registration info on centerforcentering.org

Is it any wonder we quieted down? More on workshops exploring the buried history of Quakerism at centerforcentering.org “The ‘scold’s bridle’ consisted of a headpiece made of iron, opening by hinges at the side to enclose the head, with a flat piece of iron projecting inwards to press the tongue down and hold it still. Other versions were made by a multiplication of hoops, more like a cage, with the front forming a mask of iron with holes for the mouth, nose and eyes. Sometimes the mouth-plate was armed with a short spike, to cut into the tongue if it was moved. A particularly cruel bridle was made with a long spike protruding from the mouth-plate into which the tongue was forced to curl, making breathing unnatural and deliberate. Once the bridle was placed on the woman, she was then led through the streets by the beadle or chained to the market cross. Apart from the obvious fear and pain of wearing it, the bridle was intended to humiliate the wearer. Bystanders would jeer, hurl insults, throw objects, spit at and even urinate on women whilst chained. Perhaps even more cruelly, a woman who was forced to wear the bridle at home, as a deterrent to her children, would present a terrifying picture, with the distortion of her features and probable laceration of her tongue and lips.“ - Vicci Duncan So grateful for Michele Lise Tarter’s important research on the buried history of Quakerism - before we were muzzled by empire. And for her encouragement in building the offerings for The Center for Centering, dedicated to revitalizing the embodied forms of worship and collective discernment that made the early movement so threatening. Do you sometimes just want to scream at your screen when you hit that wall, when you can’t write and think anymore? The writing rut has struck again..... Here is what I do to get out of that: leave the laptop and take my journal and pen and find another space, ideally in nature, to find my voice and ideas again This past weekend at the @pendlehillusa retreat center outside of Philadelphia, during @mawca_ ’s annual writing retreat, I found a ton of places that I wanted to share with you, featured in this short video Hopefully inspiring you to break your rut and seek inspiration at a wooden bench under a tree, or a cozy nook in a coffee shop, or whatever spaces work for you What spaces get you out of your rut? Drop them in the comments #scicomm #sciencecommunication #writingpractice #writing [Video description: The video begins with a stationary shot of a small desk beside a bed, featuring an open laptop, keyboard, mouse, desk lamp, and a drink. It then transitions to a series of vertical smartphone clips and photos taken while walking through the peaceful garden and woodsy paths at the Pendle Hill Retreat Center outside of Philadelphia. The camera moves along winding paths bordered by mature trees, dense greenery, flowering plants, bamboo, and landscaped garden beds. Throughout, the camera pauses on quiet places to sit and reflect, including wooden benches, a small gazebo or pavilion, and an open lawn with Adirondack chairs surrounding a fire pit. A stream with rocks and lush vegetation, shaded pathways, and leafy canopies create a calm, natural atmosphere. The video ends with a black screen displaying the closing prompt “Drop in the comments what works for you to break up your writing rut” and the CapCut logo.]

Take a walk with me! This was my break after a multi-hour writing session today, working on a narrative review, co-authored with Julie A. Rosen, Ph.D., about #SciComm programs and courses for biomedical researchers Enjoy beautiful @pendlehillusa, my home for the weekend during the Mid-Atlantic Writing Centers Association’s @mawca_ annual writing retreat Taking breaks during long writing sessions is super important and boosts productivity. What else are all you writers and #SciCommers out there to sustain your writing practice? Drop some ideas in the comments! [Video description: The video opens with a selfie-style shot of Isabell standing outdoors beside a stone building. She smiles at the camera before the video transitions to a first-person walking tour through a lush, green landscape. The remainder of the video consists of steady handheld footage moving along wooded paths, tree-lined trails, and landscaped gardens. The camera passes mature trees (at one point, text appears on the screen identifying one of the trees as an American Beech), dense vegetation, a bamboo grove, a small pond covered with green aquatic plants, open meadows, and historic-looking buildings partially visible through the trees. Additional scenes include a rustic wooden arbor over a garden path and a close-up view of Isabell’s feet walking through a grass labyrinth. The camera movement creates the feeling of taking a leisurely walk through the grounds. The video concludes with the closing message “More about our narrative review about #SciComm programs for Biomedical Science researchers soon!” on a black background and the CapCut logo.]

Writing is hard Thinking of myself as a writer was even harder What helped me was figuring out what motivated to write — and actually enjoy it! One of those things was finding cozy places to get writing done No shortage here at @pendlehillusa , where I am spending the weekend on a writing retreat, organized by @mawca_ — working on some overdue #SciComm projects What helps you write? Drop some tips in the comments about what helps your write [Video description: video and photographs of the shared common room in one of the retreat houses at Pendle Hill, furnished with antique- and cozy-looking sofas, armchairs, built-in book shelf’s, and locket lighting coming on through the many windows - video ends with the text overlaid on the screen “Drop some tips in the comments about what helps your write”]
