This is the mighty Penistone Paramount Cinema.

It opened in 1914. It’s survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the arrival of television, video recorders, DVDs, streaming, Covid and a short run of Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.

Whether it can survive Reform running the local Council is another matter.

I first walked through its doors about 45 years ago with my old man, to watch The Muppet Movie. (Five stars) Since then, I’ve watched countless films there and take Charlie through those same doors all the time. It still has an interval at half time, for a beer and an ice cream. Its bloody marvellous.

But this isn’t just an old cinema people feel sentimental about, it runs accessible screenings, and on bitterly cold days it opens its doors so people can come inside, keep warm and have some company. It is not just in the community. It is the community.

Anyway.. the council’s new Reform administration has pulled a £1.8 million funding package intended to secure the Paramount’s future. And look… I’m sure that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Penistone not returning a Reform councillor at a by-election a few weeks back.

That would be a real DICK move.

Regardless, there’s now a petition asking the council to reverse the decision.

Please sign it. Once places like the Paramount are gone, they’re gone. No amount of staring at an old photograph and saying, ‘ooh, it were lovely in there,’ will bring them back.

The Paramount is also up for BIFA’s Cinema of the Year, so please vote for it too. If only to remind some folk that people can still recognise the value of something beyond its price.

If you’ve read this far, Thankya! Matt x
