The Power Decks Reaches 287 Students in Ogun State!

Civic education hits differently when students can see themselves in the conversation.

Through our Civic Education Activation, @pennerpaulfoundation, a sub-grantee of FactCheckAfrica’s Digital Democracy Lab supported by the @ng_youthfund, took The Power Decks into two schools in Ogun State, reaching 287 students with practical conversations on civil rights, responsible leadership and active citizenship.

The sessions supervised by @ademidoyinpaul went beyond the traditional classroom lecture. Across the two schools, 84 students participated in the first activation, while another 203 students joined the second, creating room for students to ask questions, share experiences and engage directly with civic concepts. The two-hour sessions used storytelling, drama activities, group discussions and debates to make the lessons relatable and participatory.

The activation also revealed an important opportunity: educators expressed interest in integrating fact-checking and civic education into school curricula, while the facilitators recommended dedicated civic and social-impact clubs where students can continue practising and advocating for accurate information and responsible citizenship.

287 students reached. Two schools engaged. One bigger goal: raising a generation that knows its rights, understands its responsibilities and is ready to participate.

This is what happens when civic education moves from “read and remember” to “play, discuss, question and apply.”

Sometimes, one conversation can quietly reshape the way you think.

That was my experience after first listening to Mrs. @moladeadeniyi , CEO of @teachfornigeria , during the @gpkiddies 20th Anniversary.

A few days later, I watched her interview on TVC COMMUNICATIONS Your View, and instead of simply watching, I found myself writing down points that kept challenging my thinking about education the educational system

A few lessons I took away:

Quality teachers matter more than beautiful buildings. Infrastructure is important, but learning happens because of effective teachers.

• Foundational literacy and numeracy remain the bedrock of every child's future. If we get the foundation wrong, every other investment becomes more difficult.

• Curriculum implementation is just as important as curriculum design. We cannot introduce practical subjects without providing the tools, equipment, and trained teachers needed to deliver them.

• Every child learns differently. A child's learning level is not always the same as their age. Teaching at the right level is essential if we truly want children to succeed.

• Teachers shape every profession. Before there is a doctor, engineer, lawyer, or entrepreneur, there is a teacher.

• Technology should not replace good teaching, but it should help prepare children to compete in an increasingly digital world.

These reflections reaffirm why, through @pennerpaul foundation , we continue to invest in foundational learning by providing curriculum-based classroom banners to underserved primary schools. We have also had the privilege of supporting several Teach For Nigeria Fellows with these learning resources because we believe that when teachers are equipped, children are better positioned to learn, and collaborating with others who share the vision that every child deserves the opportunity to learn well.

As education advocates, we may not solve every challenge overnight, but every meaningful conversation, every classroom is improved, every teacher empowered, and every child encouraged brings us one step closer to the education system we all desire.

This morning, on my way to work, something happened that I couldn't stop thinking about.

I was sitting beside a parent in a public bus when his phone rang. From the conversation, I realized it was a call from his child's school. They asked him to bring a cardigan because his child had gone to school without one.
Immediately, he called his wife and asked, "Why did our child leave home without a cardigan?"
I sat there quietly, but my mind kept racing.

The rainy season is here. Even as adults, many of us are battling catarrh, cough, and other infections because of the weather. How much more of our little children, whose immune systems are still developing?

Sometimes, we are in a hurry to get them ready for school that we forget the little things that matter. A cardigan. A sweater. A raincoat. An umbrella.
These are not just accessories; they help protect our children.

This experience also made me think about schools. I know every school has its rules, and parents also have responsibilities. But during this rainy season, I hope schools will carefully consider the safety of every child before asking a child to leave school because they don't have a cardigan or because of outstanding fees. Sending a child back into the rain can expose them to unnecessary risks.

To every parent reading this, before your child leaves for school each morning, please take a moment to ask yourself:
"Is my child warm enough for today's weather?"

And to every teacher, thank you for looking out for our children. Your care often goes beyond teaching, and many parents may never fully know the difference you make.

Sometimes, protecting a child begins with something as simple as making sure they are warm.

While facilitating a session on social impact, I shared a lesson that continues to shape how I approach community projects.

Impact is not only about outputs and outcomes; it is also about sustainability.
However have you heard about project sustainability and impact sustainability?

In social impact, I am of the opinion that we should also measure both project sustainability (whether a project continues to exist over time) and impact sustainability (whether the change created continues to benefit people long after the project ends).

This principle guides our Let's Make Education Beautiful project. @pennerpaulfoundation

Beyond creating curriculum-based learning materials for classrooms, we are focused on creating lasting change in how children learn, think, dream, and see their future. Through this initiative, we transform underserved classrooms into learning environments that support understanding, curiosity, and participation.
So far, we have reached over 1,500 students, trained 50 teachers, distributed curriculum-based visual learning resources, and supported schools across Lagos and Ogun States.

In one intervention school, attendance increased from approximately 15% to 70%.
I believe every child deserves a learning environment that helps them succeed, regardless of their background.

As we design projects and measure impact, one question always remains:
Will this still be benefiting people years from now?

That is the kind of impact we should all strive to create.

Recently, Mummy @ibukunawosika said at the annual summit of the conference for private school associations in Lagos:

"When we kill their ability to ask questions, we kill their curiosity and their ability to innovate because every innovation is a solution to a question asked and a problem solved."

That is exactly the classroom we are building. One where every child is free to ask, wonder, and grow.

My team and I at PENNER PAUL FOUNDATION have been walking into underserved classrooms in Lagos and Ogun State not with speeches but with curriculum-based wall charts, teacher training with easy-access handouts, and student engagement sessions that make learning visible, joyful, and lasting.
We have reached over a hundred thousand students.
We have trained teachers who had never received formal support.
We have installed banners that are still on classroom walls long after we leave.

🌍 Meet this week's Changemaker: Adedoyin Paul

This week, we are delighted to spotlight @ademidoyinpaul, a Nigerian education advocate and Founder of the @pennerpaulfoundation.

For over 7 years, Adedoyin has championed initiatives that expand access to quality education and create environments where every child can thrive. Through projects such as Love on the Street and the Book Distribution Drive, she has reached more than 500 children, providing educational materials, mentorship, and moral guidance.

She has also reimagined learning environments through her Let's Make Education Beautiful project, transforming classrooms into spaces that are more attractive, stimulating, and conducive to learning.

Despite operating largely through personal sacrifice, volunteer support, and limited funding, Adedoyin has remained steadfast in her belief that every child deserves access to quality education, regardless of their circumstances.

I came across this conversation on early learning, and it really made me pause. The idea that education should build character, not just grades, is something I deeply resonate with. For a long time, our system has focused on memorisation and performance. Children are taught to pass exams, not necessarily to understand or apply what they are learning, and when you think about it, that is where the real gap begins.

This is something UNESCO has continued to emphasise, that we must move beyond just access to education and begin to focus on quality and meaningful learning. The truth is, a child can go through school and still struggle to think critically or solve real-life problems, and that should concern all of us.

What also stood out to me in that conversation was the point about involving people with real classroom experience in policy-making. That part really stayed with me because you cannot design a system you have never truly experienced. It is not enough to hold positions, there has to be understanding. There has to be people at the table who know what it means to teach, to manage a classroom, and to truly engage a child.

At the same time, while we are having these conversations about reform, we cannot ignore the reality on ground. Many schools, especially in underserved communities, are still struggling with basic things like infrastructure, teacher welfare, and learning materials. So it is not just about changing curriculum or methods, it is also about fixing the foundation that supports learning.

I also believe strongly that education has to be flexible. Not every child learns the same way, and not every child will naturally fit into the traditional classroom system. Some children are more hands-on, and this is where skill-based learning and practical approaches come in. When properly structured, they can even serve as a bridge, attracting children who are not initially interested in school and gradually drawing them into learning.
When i say "Let’s Make Education Beautiful” is not just a statement or a project.
At @pennerpaulfoundation , it goes beyond the physical school environment.

The recent initiative by the Universal Basic Education Commission through the HOPE-EDU programme is a strong reminder that education remains a national priority, and rightly so. A programme designed to bring millions of out-of-school children back into the classroom, while also investing in teachers and infrastructure, reflects a level of commitment that cannot be ignored.

Yet, beyond the scale and the numbers, my mind keeps going to what happens after enrollment. Because bringing a child into school is one thing, but keeping that child learning is another reality entirely.

In my work with children and communities, I have seen firsthand that access does not always translate to understanding. A child can sit in a classroom every day and still struggle silently, especially when foundational learning gaps are not addressed early.

The Programme-for-Results model is a thoughtful approach. It introduces accountability by tying funding to outcomes, which is important. But it also raises a quiet question: what exactly are we defining as “results”? If we are not careful, we may celebrate enrollment figures while overlooking whether real learning is taking place.

This is where teacher capacity, classroom experience, and the learning environment become even more important. When a child feels seen, supported, and able to understand what is being taught, school becomes a place of growth, not just attendance.
This is something I have come to understand deeply through my work with the PENNER PAUL FOUNDATION especially through initiatives like Let’s Make Education Beautiful. When the learning experience improves and children begin to understand, their willingness to stay in school changes naturally.

Access matters. But experience matters just as much. Because in the end, true educational inclusion is not just about being present in school, it is about being able to learn, grow, and truly thrive within it.

The intention behind HOPE-EDU is powerful. The opportunity now is to ensure that its impact is not only seen in numbers, but felt in the lives of the children it seeks to serve.

Stepping Beyond the Classroom — Creating Real Impact

It was an absolute privilege to serve as a facilitator at the Let’s Make Education Beautiful 3.0 program.

What stood out most was not just the opportunity to teach, but the chance to engage with passionate educators who are committed to growth, excellence, and transformation in their classrooms.

We moved beyond theory into practical, actionable strategies focusing on literacy, classroom effectiveness, and sustainable teacher development.

Moments like this reaffirm a core belief I hold strongly:
when teachers are empowered, classrooms are transformed, and when classrooms are transformed, the future is reshaped.
I am deeply grateful to the organizers for the platform, and to every teacher in the room who showed up ready to learn, reflect, and evolve.

The journey to making education truly beautiful continues—and I am proud to be part of that movement.
