He went from 6:53 to 6:18 in a year.

Phil Brunner, now associate head coach at Penn, tells the story of Hubert Trzybinski, the German two time U23 world champion in the single who rowed at Yale.

When Phil asked him when he got really good, Hubert said one year he went from 6:53 in his sophomore year of high school to 6:18.

Phil’s point: if a coach ignores the athlete who emails at 6:53, then by 6:18 that athlete remembers they never heard back, and looks somewhere else first.

That’s why he believes coaches should be high touch. If an athlete reaches out, reply and say “tell me what you’re doing, keep me informed.” Athletes develop, and the best programmes track them the whole way.

For athletes: keep sending updates, even if you haven’t heard back yet. Your 2k today isn’t your 2k next year, coaches want to see your trajectory!

Comment PHIL and we’ll send you the full podcast episode.

UTR Student Spotlight:
☀️ Sophia Leung! ☀️

“I am a second-year UTR masters student currently teaching fourth grade ELA at Mayfair Elementary in Northeast Philadelphia. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Urban Studies and a minor in Urban Education.

My first year in the program was filled with plenty of challenges, but I received so much support and guidance from my professors, mentors, and peers in UTR. This program has provided me with the resources I need to successfully serve my students and a community that has meant so much to me as I start out in this field.

One of my favorite teaching moments was at the end of the school year, I had my students write ‘Dear Future 4th Graders’ letters to the incoming classes. It was simultaneously nerve wracking and heartwarming to see what they had to say and realize just how much they had been watching and listening to me during the year!”

As long as you’re showing progression, you have a shot.”
Oliver Willet: Greenwich Crew → Penn: on the one thing he’d tell every recruit:
Reach out to more coaches. A lot of athletes never send the email because they don’t think they’re qualified. But coaches aren’t looking for perfect, they’re looking for improvement. No matter where you are, if you’re trending up, you’re in the conversation.

Want to get in front of coaches like the ones Oliver reached out to? Our ID camp this month is the place to do it.

Today’s Athlete Spotlight is Ethan who is on his way to row at UPenn this fall. Ethan came to us from Deerfield with no sculling experience but with a strong work ethic and determination to succeed. Ethan was in the Deerfield boys 8+ that won gold at Youth Nationals this summer. We look forward to following his rowing career and wish him the best! #wolfeborocampschool

Introducing one of the crews heading to HRR qualifiers

THE SILVER GOBLETS & NICKALLS’ CHALLENGE CUP

Alex Willott
Luke Putter

All three head to head matchups between this pair during the US collegiate racing season ended within a single-second margin. They have decided to temporarily put the rivalry aside for a Henley campaign.

The crew will look to get out of the blocks with the urgency that Northeastern showed against Washington and GB, while also pushing through crews in the final 250 like Penn did against Northeastern.
