This summer, Veronica Guo (M&T’29) worked in the lab of Thomas Mallouk, the Vagelos Professor of Energy Research and Professor of Chemistry at Penn. There, she explored how certain materials can harness sunlight to produce clean energy.

Supported by a Penn Undergraduate Sustainability Action Grant, Guo is studying a photoelectrochemical system designed to use sunlight to drive water splitting and solar fuel production. Her work focuses on the oxygen evolution reaction, a key step in the process, and explores how redox mediators and polymer layers can improve its performance.

Guo says working on the oxygen evolution reaction "is motivating because it's a place where materials research can translate into technologies that address climate change."
