I’m always a little late posting, but here are a few of my favorite memories from my time in NYC during the SAB Residency and the ABT Curriculum. Even though it was a busy and inspiring season of learning, I always make time to enjoy the magic of the Big Apple and spend time with friends. Grateful for every moment, every lesson, and every memory. Until next time, NYC! 🗽❤️✨

Are you gripping your quads? 🤔

Quad gripping is common, and it’s often a matter of faulty muscle firing, weight placement, and mental imagery. So how can dancers beat the habit and start engaging the right balance of muscles?

In this article, two experts—rehearsal director Juan Carlos Peñuela (@dancetheatreofharlem) and founder/artistic director Georné Aucoin (@icsb_ballet)—share their best advice.

Yesterday, we launched Chamber Ballet Sessions, a project I’ve been developing for quite some time to create a space where dancers can collaborate with a live orchestra—a rare opportunity for many.

Seeing dancers and musicians share the room, respond to one another, and create something together was everything I had hoped for. The smiles said it all.

I couldn’t have asked for a better pilot event. Thank you to everyone who danced, played, taught, volunteered, attended, and helped bring it to life.

Stay tuned for what’s next. 🎻🩰✨

A little of who Mommy was 🩰, and what Mommy does.

The first time I saw @dancetheatreofharlem was here at @nycitycenter My aunt @yasminhurston brought me to see the ballet when I was a little girl. I was training at a different school where I was the only one who looked like me. Back then, I had no idea I would preform with the DTH company on that very same stage.

I remained with the company until they unexpectedly closed their doors in 2004.
I had to pivot.
Moved from NY.
Had several career shifts, but ballet always stayed with me.

This year, I returned to the theater for the first time in nearly 20+ years and as life would have it, with DTH. It still feels surreal.

Sharing this with my family was a chance to bring my past together with my present. But most of all, seeing my daughter’s reaction when she watched the ballet and met the dancers. It nearly took my breath away. Now, she has her own memories to cherish.

This experience was a series of full circles, reunions, happy tears, and celebrating a legacy I’m proud to be part of. It was truly a return home and an opportunity to do something I’m deeply passionate about.

The final photos are from DTH 2001, my first official season with the company ⭕️
Thank you to my loved ones for your love & support as I moved through this journey. From the bottom of my heart ❤️
