What a fantastic night for New Jersey photography! We celebrated the Member reception for “Garden State Lens” with 11 NJ photographers, food and drink, a conversation with the curator, and more! The exhibition opens to the public tomorrow, Friday, October 16th.

In this major exhibition, candid photography—unscripted, unposed images taken from everyday life—by eleven contemporary artists explore the lives lived in the nation’s most densely populated and ethnically diverse state. “Garden State Lens” presents scenes of New Jerseans going about their everyday lives. We see them raise their families, earn a living, come together as a community, and enjoy the state’s great outdoors.

Featuring artists Ben MacMaster, Christy Warren, Cynthia Egle, Dorie Dahlberg, Edward Fausty, Erik James Montgomery, Frank Hanavan, Jean Paul Picard, Joya Angola Thompson, Sean Burns, and Tolu Olasoji.

What a great day of reliving & rewatching the IN 7 videos and premiering the short IN 7 documentary, filmed and edited by documentarian Tolu Olasoji.

Through his lens, we got a glimpse into the people, process, unexpected connections, and creative energy that shaped this year’s residency in Jersey City which was rooted at Arts 14C.

It felt like a homecoming to be back at Arts 14C during Saturday’s JCAST.

Thanks to everyone who came out, stopped by, watched, reminisced, & supported this special screening.

If you missed it, we’re planning on additional screenings so stay tuned to hear what unfolds.

Creativity has no road map, you just have to create the art & see where it goes. Trusting the process is the hardest part. IN 7 is a constant reminder of that.

A few moments from tonight’s JCAST screening and documentary premiere, presented by Kasia Skorynkiewicz in partnership with Gardenship and Arts 14C. It was great to see Tolu’s video on the big screen. Thanks, Kasia and Tolu, for sharing your work. Looking forward to the next one!

One of the most meaningful parts of this project for me has been seeing how people responded to these images and, in many cases, finding the courage to put those thoughts into words.

I have noticed that writing a poem, even a very simple one, can sometimes make people hesitate. Some were comfortable with it right away, while others took some time to think about what they wanted to say. Some wrote something, changed it, questioned it, and then shared it anyway. Others thought about participating but never found the right words or the opportunity to submit. I appreciate all of it.

As this project comes to an end, I want to sincerely thank everyone who contributed a poem, and everyone who simply spent some time looking at these images and thinking about what they might say.

I never wanted the poems to be limited by structure. Five, seven, five was never as important to me as the honesty behind the words. What mattered was the feeling, thought, memory, or perspective that someone wanted to share.

What I have appreciated most is that each poem gave me a small glimpse of the person who wrote it. In just a few words, I sometimes felt like I was seeing something I might not otherwise have known about someone. A thought, a feeling, a memory, or simply the way they see something.

That has been a very special part of this project for me.

So, thank you to everyone who shared something of themselves with me. And thank you to everyone who supported the project, followed along, encouraged me, or simply took a moment to look.

I am very grateful for all of it.

These images began as my perspective. Your words allowed me to see them through yours.
