“All things are birthed from the dark: the Big Bang, inside the womb, seed-to-soil, the deep sea.

Chaos precipitates creation, and how do we get to know it?”–excerpt from the press release

The works included in “The Long Dark” explore our connections to history, material, self, and our social and ecological environment. Each of the seven artists (@tv_embrace, @brooklynbeachouse, @pepinoconchile, @carlyries, @twinclouds, @viktortimofeev, and @dexvandersall) engages with material, process, form, and concept to discover inner truths, creating visual and emotional languages that reveal what lies beneath the surface.

🗓 The Long Dark on view through Apr 11, 2026
📍Cuchifritos Gallery @ 88 Essex St [inside Essex Market]
⏰Gallery hours: Wed - Sat from 12–6p

This exhibition, organized in collaboration with @parent.company.gallery and their exhibiting artists Bryce Kroll and Leonardo Madriz, was inspired by a concept shared by @le___oh and takes its title from writer and psychotherapist Francis Weller’s idea of the “long dark,” a necessary period of descent, gestation, and reflection where the focus is inward, on restraint and deep listening to integrate the feelings of being in suspension within our contemporary climate and current reality.

Join us in this generative, reflective space to experience the transformative works shown here by @tv_embrace, @brooklynbeachouse, @pepinoconchile, @carlyries, and @twinclouds. Visit Cuchifritos Gallery at @essexmarket to view these pieces and more including additional works by @viktortimofeev and @dexvandersall.

Maria Jose Garcia Estevez (@pepinoconchile) is a sculptor and installation artist making precarious amalgamations of materials sourced from Mexico and the United States. She allows each work to arrive at its own logic, foregrounding impermanence, repetition, and the space between intention and outcome. Maria Jose uses materials that carry cultural memory, particularly in relation to food as a point of access, pushing and handling them until new meanings emerge. Pictured here is “Untitled (une)” made from galvanized electrical tube and corn husks. 🌽

Stop by Cuchifritos Gallery inside @essexmarket to view Estevez’s work, and the works of six other contemporary NY-based artists as part of the exhibition “The Long Dark” in collaboration with @parent.company.gallery

Across varied media and approaches, the artists in “The Long Dark” engage with time beyond linear or Western frameworks, turning instead toward geographic time, cyclical processes, ancestral memory, and what Weller calls “soul-time” (i.e., a deeper experience of time, a slowing down to engage with the oscillation of our inner lives and the natural world, offering meaningful points of reflection, connection, and ultimately processing emotions).

Pictured here are works by Clare Koury (@tv_embrace), Simon Benjamin (@brooklynbeachouse), and Maria Jose Garcia Estevez (@pepinoconchile), who use natural materials such as copper, sand, and corn husks to unlock the embedded histories and relations within material, process, and form.

“The Long Dark” emerged from an invitation. In conversation, curators Yani aviles and Ada Potter (@adapootter) imagined what foregrounding collaboration could look like during this time. Organically, they developed an exhibition structure that would bridge their two locations and programs (AAI | Cuchifritos and Parent Company), allowing associations to shape a curatorial narrative that reflects and coheres disparate connections.

They invited @bryce.kroll and @le___oh (the two exhibiting artists @parent.company.gallery during the run of this exhibition) to share lists of artist friends and peers whose practices resonate with and expand their own. From these constellations of influence and exchange, a group of artists was selected whose work reflects shared material, conceptual, and ethical concerns. “The Long Dark” is less a thematic grouping and more a thematic emergence–an exhibition as meeting point shaped by relational thinking, mutual regard, and sustained conversation.
