Our team was proud to attend yesterday’s Art in the Atrium, featuring HYPE HAIR by Peppermint Sandy (@peppermintsandy).

Through her multidisciplinary use of fabric, hair, textiles, and mixed media, Sandy makes a powerful statement about the cultural and societal constructions of beauty, fashion, and identity.

Sandy described it best: “HYPE HAIR is a series of wearable sculptures inspired not just by my relationship with Black hair, but as a dedication and love letter to all Black women and girls everywhere, and our hair as well. From the beginning of time, Black hair has been not only art, but a form of communication.”

Thank you to the artist and to Dawn, Vicki, and the rest of the Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs team for creating such an inspiring experience that celebrates creativity and culture!

According to the Sandy, “HYPE HAIR is a series of wearable sculptures inspired by not just my relationship with black hair, but a dedication and love letter to all black women and girls everywhere with our hair as well. From the beginning of time, black hair is not only art, but a form of communication.”

Peppermint Sandy is a multidisciplinary artist working with fabric, hair, textiles, and mixed media to explore cultural and societal constructions of beauty, fashion, and identity. Born in Miami, FL to Haitian immigrant parents, she draws inspiration from personal upbringing, historical aesthetics, and generational memory, her work examines how beauty rituals transcend time and connect past and present experiences.
