For centuries, Malabar pepper was so prized in Europe that it was called "black gold." It grew wild in the hills of India's Malabar coast, yet in Europe it was worth its weight in gold. European explorers set out on the trail of pepper, launching the Age of Exploration and changing the course of human history. The same trail eventually brought the British to India, and with them Colin Auley Mackenzie, who set up the estate and its pepper plantation in the 1870s.

Pepper Trail takes its name from the journey of Malabar pepper, which shaped both the retreat and the world beyond it.
