"These two releases make a particularly effective pairing. no wonder • なるほど explores musical memory, accumulated fragments, and the creative freedom that comes from working within constraints. ilulissat turns outward, drawing on the physical world and translating its impact into an abstract but emotionally direct sonic language. Both favor patience, intention, careful construction, and a willingness to let sounds develop beyond their initial identities."

Apparently it’s Cassette Week, so it’s very apt I stumbled across this cool little shop in a rundown flea market building in Bandung, Java.
Perhaps one day they will stock tsubai’s debut album of ambient drone, “ilulissat”, available now through the wonderful @perceptual.tapes (Shameless promo plug over)

Great post day!

Big up @normanrecs for stocking the new ambient/drone album from one of our own.

@stubaimusic felt the need to rechristen himself as #tsubai for this release - that's how far removed from his prior indie/alt rock leanings that he feels this project is. The backstory is fascinating (have a read up on his page) and the resulting work is stark, stirring and ever so strong. Also, special shout out to Aussie label @perceptual.tapes for producing a physical product of such striking, well-suited beauty.

I can't wait to get glacial with this one. And just in time for #cassetteweek too!

tsubai’s full-length ambient drone album ilulissat is out now on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms, and as a limited edition of 50 cassettes through Hobart’s Perceptual Tapes.

ilulissat means “icebergs” in Greenlandic, and the project came about after I had the good fortune to journey to its namesake town in the Arctic Circle in July 2025. When I got back to Sydney, I wanted to record a suite of music, using just an electric guitar and stock plug-ins in Logic Pro, to capture how I felt while immersed in those spellbinding surroundings.

While there may be no lyrics to parse on ilulissat, the album explores themes of life, change, death and rebirth through the story of ice.

Four shorter pieces on Side A trace the life cycle of ice – from its formation (Accretion), growth (Striation) and decay (Ablation), to its final demise (Sublimation).

Two longer compositions on Side B explore the origin story of an Ilulissat iceberg, which starts life as snowflakes falling on the Greenland Ice Sheet (Sermersuaq). After thousands of years, these snowflakes, now compacted into dense ice, pass through the Jakobshavn Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) to the Ilulissat Icefjord.

From here, icebergs are calved into the sea to begin their journey south into the Atlantic Ocean, constantly evolving in shape, texture and colour, but always diminishing in size as the elements take their toll. Eventually, the icebergs meet their inevitable demise and join the ocean and sky in a final act of sublimation.

But the story doesn’t end there. The water will evaporate, rise into the clouds, condense and precipitate … perhaps over the Greenland Ice Sheet as snowflakes, and the cycle can continue (if global warming doesn’t get there first).

So ilulissat is a metaphor for life, change (be it climate or personal), death and rebirth. But if all that is a bit too po-faced, here’s a final fun fact: the iceberg that sank the Titanic most likely came from Ilulissat.

Featuring on M.P.R Ambient is the upcoming album by Nekomachi titled 'no wonder'

no wonder • なるほど is a collection of experimental ambient pieces by veteran Tokyo-based artist Nekomachi. Working entirely with a vintage Yamaha QY100 rather than modern computer-based tools, Nekomachi weaves field recordings, shimmering digital synths and chopped-up, glitched sequences into immersive and detailed sound worlds.

Featuring on M.P.R Ambient is the upcoming album by tsubai titled 'Ilulissat'.

Musician Matt Teffer turns towards a completely different terrain with his debut ambient work as tsubai. Inspired by a journey to Greenland's Ilulissat Icefjord in July 2025, ilulissat is a deeply immersive reflection on one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

Named after the Greenlandic word for ‘icebergs’, the album captures the majesty and mystery of the icescapes of Ilulissat. Transfixed by the scale, shifting forms and colours of the icebergs, Matt returned home to Sydney inspired to translate his experience into sound.
