BARN QUILT
Jessa Goebel
Acrylic Paint, Steel
7 x 7

This small and powerful sculpture is a masterpiece of metalwork. Jessa cut the lozenges by hand, hand-punched them, painted each one, and then welded them together in a perfect grid.

There are 196 of these pieces, meticulously crafted, composed and assembled into a quilt pattern much like the designs you see on barns throughout the countryside.

The punched lozenges represent opioid pills which have unfortunately become endemic in many rural areas, in the same way that the quilt patterns are part and parcel of rural culture. A faint sliver of hope (and perhaps ironically so) is that barn quilt patterns were created as code to communicate information regarding escape routes for freed or escaped slaves, who were not allowed to learn to read, but were able to understand the coded symbols that were incorporated into the quilt patterns hung on barns.

Similarly, there is a way out of the opioid epidemic, but it will take coordinated effort between those facilitating escape and the ones they seek to help.

“Barn Quilt” by Jessa Goebel (@perennial_artforms) and other works by artists in our fifth-year invitational are available for purchase at 17 East Main Street, Richwood WV until April 11, 2026.

We are open Thursday-Saturday noon-6pm. Other days and times are available by appointment.

CELEBRATION
Jessa Goebel
Steel
13L x 37H x 7D

Coming from Fayetteville, WV, “Celebration” by Jessa Goebel is a 30-lb piece of steel, which she notched into regularly-spaced segments using a high-powered saw, then heated where the notches ended using crazy-intense coal heat before twisting each section by turn to achieve the 90-degree rotation she wanted for each. Up-close observation lets the viewer see the degree of twist needed to achieve the final form. What the eye doesn’t see, however, is that it took the strength of three people working together to make all the 90-degree turns happen!

The overall upward gesture of this piece in combination with the outward reach of each section exudes a triumphal energy, and fittingly so!

In Jessa’s own words:
“This piece is a celebration of West Virginias coal heritage, the story of the rise of coal, how it transformed communities, then abandoned them, and how it has changed forms to resurrect and reshape.

“(My) inspiration came from the process of coal being essential for every evolutionary stage of the life of this piece.”

This work by Jessa Goebel (perennial artforms) and other works by artists in our fifth-year invitational are available for purchase at 17 East Main Street, Richwood WV. We are open Thursday-Saturday noon-6pm. Other days and times are available by appointment.
