A creative life without boundaries... Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was one of the great polymaths of the 20th-century avant-garde: poet, playwright, filmmaker, artist, and designer. ✨

From the dreamlike worlds of *Orphée* and *La Belle et la Bête* to the murals and frescoes of his later years, his unmistakable line found its way across paper, walls, objects, and entire rooms. An enduring inspiration in what can happen when one medium is never enough.

A close friend of Picasso and longtime partner of Jean Marais, Cocteau spent his later years in Milly-la-Forêt, where he transformed spaces into poetic works of art, from frescoes and murals to the chapel where he was ultimately buried.

Hi, hello, we’re back at our Alpine Meadows project to reflect on the transformation that we helped realize with some more before & afters.

This zone of the house is the space for congregating, but the original approach was blocked off by tall cabinetry in a way that felt more obscuring and segregating than welcoming and connective. Curiously, the row of tall cabinets was also built above a low, partial void next to the original refrigerator, where an access door to a crawl space was located. (We moved this into one of the hallways.)

One major decision we made with our clients was to put everything into low cabinetry, including refrigeration, emphasizing both the ceiling height and the slatted partition we designed. We also wanted to keep things feeling airy and open with the new windows we extended into and around the corner. Their family is here most frequently during the ski season and when entertaining friends and family over holidays and weekends, so the need for significant and sustained food storage was unnecessary, and also unsafe because of the bears. We always learn to incorporate new layers of consideration when we work in new regions. Respect for the bears who live there, too, was one of these instances, affecting everything from door handles to windows to food storage!

The cabinets themselves are faced in walnut and feature exposed joinery at the edges, a detail inspired by the beautiful work at Garde Hvalsøe. We added some shine with unlacquered brass accents seen in the faucetry, lighting, hardware, and a very special patinated brass hood cover fabricated for us by our friends at Berlin Food & Lab.

While the turquoise laminate was replaced with hardy, soapstone countertops, we didn’t want the kitchen to be devoid of color, so we introduced some glistening oxblood-colored tile from @rookwoodpottery. A work table from @unionstudio.sf that our studio has always loved is also wearing subtly-hued indigo feet.

Some people bring home souvenirs. I bring home flavors.
I had this lentil soup once in Puerto Rico and loved it enough that I’ve been trying to recreate it from memory ever since.
This attempt? Good. But not it. I still haven’t cracked the code—and I won’t give up.
Maybe that’s part of what I love about cooking. You taste something somewhere in the world, carry the memory home with you, and keep finding your way back to it in your own kitchen.
Recipes really are the best souvenirs.

The Landed team was fortunate enough to stay at the house during the photoshoot. Padding to this kitchen when the light is blue and everything is hushed was a soothing way to ease ourselves into our (very) early start to each day.

A custom island was expertly crafted by @petersen_antiques, who made several pieces for us in this home. The design was loosely inspired by the one in Alice Waters’ kitchen, with a wide plank spanning the base for easy storage. We added drawers and hooks along several faces for utensils, napkins, towels, and the like. Pulled up to it are four Arthur Umanoff counter stools, which we sourced in pairs and had re-corded locally so their backs match.

Nothing shouts country living like a fireplace in a kitchen, so we placed a wood-burning (EPA-rated) stove here, surrounded by leafy tiles from @douglaswatsonstudio. A subtle border using the same terracotta tiles seen throughout the home was designed to imply the hearth. And above the mantle, a wonky little cabinet that got questioned throughout the project, but made it across the finish line (and is a great place for stashing matches). These quirky inclusions are part of what we think makes old homes endearing.

Adjacent to the fireplace is a walk-in pantry, which ended up being the perfect solution for a room that couldn’t have windows in it, and an ideal place to make morning coffee without waking the whole house. A cubby next door houses all the dishes, glasses, and mugs for easy, centralized access throughout the day.

In a corner of the room next to the built-in sofa (more on that later), we nestled a desk from the Harvard Divinity School, circa 1910 and sourced from @obsoleteinc.
