Book Review

"Billion Dollar Ransom," by James Patterson and Duane Swierczynski

Well, first things first, this was a 5/5 read for me. And I don't hand out 5 stars lightly. (I didn't guess the ending? Did you?)

We are immediately dropped into the book's action. We start by reading a transcript of a phone call led by One, who is plotting a kidnapping with a group of others.

Mr. Schraeder, a wealthy business man and the person from which a ransom will be required, waits as all of the kidnapping of all of the members of his family are systematically carried out.

Throughout the book, we get to know more about the kidnappers, who we only know by numbers. Additionally, we learn why this group of people chose to be involved with this assignment.

I appreciated how the authors were able to humanize the kidnappers

The kidnapping cases are head up by FBI Agent Nicky Gordon. In addition to her managing the biggest case in her career, but she is concerned that there is a mole somewhere in the operation.

Will Mr. Schraeder pay the ransom demand? Will his family be returned safely? You will have to read to find out!

I received a #gifted ARC from @littlebrown in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Book Review!

"Emma on Fire," by James Patterson and Emily Redmond

"You - all of you - are sleepwalking through global catastrophe. And I intend to wake you up."

This is the third time Patterson and Redmond have teamed up and boy did they knock it out of the park. I flew through this book, unable to put it down. And when I had finished reading, I was still thinking about the story. To me, those are signs of a great book.

In this novel, which was published yesterday, we follow Emma as she navigates New Hampshire's elite boarding school, Ridgemont Academy.

What we learn early on, is that Emma is not the same person that she was last school year. Last year, she participated in sports and clubs and was a good student.

This year, she is none of those things. Emma has changed as a result of the loss of her mother and sister and being left with a negligent, workaholic father, who refuses to admit that Emma needs help.

Emma's goal this year is to get everyone to sit up and pay attention to what is going on in the world. Her plan to get noticed is to set herself on fire at school.

Throughout the year, Emma is sent to the principal's office many times, she makes plans for her big display, she pushes friends away, and she continues to share facts about what is going wrong in the world. "Cheetahs are threatened with extinction due to the habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade."

Emma struggles for anyone to take her plan seriously or to listen to her about the environment. Will she complete her plan of lighting herself on fire? You'll have to read to find out!

This was a powerful book that delves into important topics, without being preachy. I think this is an important book to read and to have a discussion about. 5/5 stars.

I received a #giftedcopy of this book from @littlebrown in exchange for a fair and honest review.
