Clearing the timeline and this space with @persephenie_studio’s precious Agarwood and my trusty old monkey. Persephenie is a magician. Recently, we traded - a long tarot session for her scent magic, and in perfect timing (February is a beast), her treasures arrived and this “wood of the gods” has been burning nonstop. Its scent is soft, faint, a safe blanket. Persephenie’s work lives and thrives deeply rooted here on Earth, and since I’m often floating out into the ether 🎻✨ whenever I use her products, I feel grounded.

Remembering our last exhibition with dear friends @thesedays.la in 2018 ...this piece feeling particularly prescient and useful. Vajrakilaya is a wrathful manifestation of Vajrasattva (the esoteric aspect of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra), the Buddha of purification.

This powerful practice of Vajrakilaya focuses on removing outer and inner obstacles to happiness, peace, bliss, and enlightenment.

The practice is famous for being the most powerful for removing obstacles, destroying the forces hostile to compassion and purifying the spiritual pollution so prevalent in this age.

Vajrakilaya is the practice to defeat the four maras , these are the four types of obstructive, ‘demonic’ forces (sometimes also translated as ‘demons’) which create obstacles to practitioners on the spiritual path. It is important to understand that they have no inherent existence and are only created by the mind.

the mara of the aggregates which symbolizes our clinging to forms, perceptions, and mental states as ‘real’;

the mara of the destructive emotions , which symbolizes our addiction to habitual patterns of negative emotion;

the mara of the Lord of Death, which symbolizes both death itself, which cuts short our precious human birth, and also our fear of change, impermanence, and death; and the mara of the sons of the gods which symbolizes our craving for pleasure, convenience, and ‘peace’.

Beloved world. I’m here again to share some updates about things I’m doing.
Today I’m back at the @dublab studio for another instalment of Open Heart Social Club from 4-6pm, I got a bunch of new music to play and I think today’s show will be a fun one, planning on playing summer music and some chill stuff that I like.
My June set from @thebasementla is now archived on dublab so feel free to check it out.
I had a really inspiring time having a day with @persephenie_studio at her studio and I’m happy to say that my incense venture is progressing as planed, if all goes well, be ready to smell some of my newly developed scents in the coming months.

An Incense Making Workshop

I often feel like my brain is atrophying from too much time spent on my computer, doomscrolling on my phone, and then my attempts to recover from such doomscrolling with an overdose of mind-numbing distraction back on my computer. One of the antidotes I have found for this unproductive behavior is making something with my hands that invigorates my senses and puts me back in touch with the present moment. This prompted me to sign up for an incense-making workshop with @persephenie_studio who I have admired from afar for a while, because she is effortlessly cool, stylish, kind, and just generally magnetic. She is also incredibly knowledgeable about scents and their origins.

Over the course of two days, we learned about the history and ritual use of incense, the ingredients used to make them, and the wide range of raw materials that can be combined to create aromatic complexity. It was such a pleasure to sniff everything, experiment with formulas, and form sticky little incense balls by hand.

Persephenie shared this image of an antique incense stand used in the Japanese incense ceremony known as kōdō. Kōdō, meaning “the way of incense,” is one of the classical Japanese arts of refinement and centers around the appreciation of scent as a sensory experience. Unlike incense that is burned for atmosphere, kōdō uses non-combustible incense that is gently heated. As part of the class, she demonstrated this ritual for us and the setup required. A vessel is filled with a bed of white ash, concealing a small piece of hot charcoal. A thin mica plate rests on top, where the incense is placed to slowly release its scent without burning. We later made the kind of incense designed for this method.

This workshop was part of a really thoughtful series offered by the @wendemuseum called Summer Camp. The tactile nature of the weekend revived parts of my brain that had felt like they were slowly shrinking. It was a reminder of the necessity to escape the digital landscape more often, and of the healing power of being playful, exploratory, and non-perfectionist for a hot moment. I highly recommend everyone take a class with Persephenie.
