Dominik Mersch Gallery is pleased to announce Peta Clancy’s solo exhibition ‘The Colonial Scar and the Curative Cut’, presenting a new body of multi-layered photographic and video works created with Yorta Yorta Country 🌙 — Soft exhibition launch on Saturday 24 October, with the official opening on Thursday 5 November from 5-7pm. Peta Clancy is the descendant of the Yorta Yorta people. Revisitation and return are at the core of ‘The Colonial Scar and the Curative Cut’, examining the tensions and complexities that returning to Ancestral Country can evoke for Aboriginal peoples; deep yearning, fear, or grief caused by the environmental destruction of Country. ‘The Colonial Scar and the Curative Cut’ will be displayed in the gallery alongside Katie West’s ‘With the tides’. ON SHOW: Two powerful new photographic works by Peta Clancy in ‘The Preview 26’ — created at night with exposures lasting up to six hours, guided only by the stars and moon 🌙 “Country is not an image to be taken on a thin skin of film in a fraction of a second. Country has agency. It holds memory, knowledge, and powerful histories.” Working with large-format equipment — tools inherited from colonial practice — Clancy makes photographs with Yorta Yorta Country. These works are not made by sight alone; they depend on what Country chooses to conceal or reveal. “There is little light to hold. Yet Country emerges — through noise and under exposure — strong and ever present. I am drawn to the potential of what cannot be seen in the bright certainty of day.” Experience these new works before the exhibition closes this Saturday 21 January 2026. Contact the gallery via DM or email on info@dominikmerschgallery.com to request further information. @peta.clancy ••• ‘Sleeping under the same stars 1 and 2’, 2026, inkjet pigment print (Canson Rag Photographique), 80 x 102 cm, edition of 5 + 1 AP ••• #petaclancy #contemporaryphotographer #nightphotograph #longexposureshots

‘The City Wakes, The City Sleeps’ at TarraWarra Museum of Art unfolds like a city mapped from the inside out, structured in scenes that echo the way a city actually functions: segmented, compartmentalised, alive with parallel lives unfolding at once ✦ Hard-edged geometries and infrastructural grids sit beside luminous landscapes; some works stage the city as architecture, while others let it dissolve into colour, memory and atmosphere. Private gestures surface within public systems, suggesting how intimacy survives inside the machinery of urban life. Peta Clancy’s photographic installation ‘Birrarung ba brungergalk’ offers a necessary counterpoint to the city as origin. Layered images of the river glow with dusk light as colonial imagery is interrupted through a return to Country, allowing multiple temporalities to coexist 🌞 Suburbia enters through Howard Arkley’s graphic language of colour and line: thick outlines and saturated hues flatten domestic space into pattern, oscillating between spectacle and quiet observation. Rosalie Gascoigne’s ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ reframes the city’s visual language using retroreflective road signage. Fragmented letters and sun-bleached yellows form a loose grid where instruction becomes ambiguity. The city speaks in partial sentences ✶ Charles Blackman’s ‘Hoardings’ and Jeffrey Smart’s ‘The Construction Fence’ stage childhood against perpetual development. Girls in red and pink pause and run across flattened urban scenes, suggesting motion without destination — learning how to inhabit a world always under construction. In ‘Mirror’, Jon Cattapan blurs city and dream through pools of green, orange flares and hazy light. It reads like memory — an urban space glimpsed through sleep ✨ Sidney Nolan’s ‘Luna Park Memories’ finds warmth in shared spectacle, while Andrew Sibley’s ‘Musicians in Love’ collapses the city into two leaning figures beneath a crescent moon. ‘The City Wakes, The City Sleeps’ presents the city as a layered experience — built and imagined, anxious and tender, communal and deeply private. Awake or asleep, the city is never still ☆ @tarrawarrama #luminosa #luminosaartsscene #tarrawarrama

I’ve been nicely busy working on a few creative projects this year. I had the honour of working with Steven Rhall, @peta.clancy and Dale Collier, whilst using my digital experience to support the arrangements of murals by First People’s at Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre. Thank you, Steven, for inviting me to be part of the team. This excellent placemaking project supports the local indigenous community in showing that they are an integral part of Wunggurrwil Dhurrung in Wyndham Vale. Upcoming photography symposium at MAPh > PHOTOREAL: The crisis of the archive, with Wominjeka Djeembana Research Lab (Monash University). We're delighted to welcome Dr Peta Clancy, Dr Kirsten Garner Lyttle and Dr Jahkarli Romanis, who present the symposium's afternoon keynote lecture: We are the Archives of our Ancestors. 🗓️ Saturday 11 October 🕙 10am to 5pm at MAPh ☕ with a light lunch and afternoon tea in the MAPh cafe 💌 Book your tickets via the link in our bio, and read on below for more on the presentation from the Wominjeka Djeembana Research lab speakers. Colonial photographs of Indigenous peoples and Country sit in archives, bearing colonisation’s violence yet preserving Ancestral memory. Dr Peta Clancy (Yorta Yorta), Dr Jahkarli Romanis (Pitta Pitta) and Dr Kirsten Garner Lyttle (Waikato Tainui, Ngāti Tahinga) reveal how photography in Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand) sought to erase Indigenous ties with Country and Kin. For Indigenous communities, these images remain Ancestral belongings. Through Indigenous knowledges, they affirm Country as living, sentient, imbued with memory, law and spirit. Although burdened by colonisation, disconnection and trauma, they can still nurture cultural restoration, memory and healing. Working with archives of their Ancestors, Country and Kin, the artists use photography, spoken word, installation, sculpture and film. Dr Peta Clancy is the Associate Dean Indigenous at Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Monash University and represented by Dominik Mersch Gallery in Australia. @peta.clancy Dr Kirsten Garner Lyttle is a Māori-Australian artist (Waikato Tainui, Ngāti Tahinga), photographer and postdoctoral research fellow at Monash University’s Wominjeka Djeembana Indigenous Research Lab. @kirstlyttle Dr Jahkarli Felicitas Romanis is a proud Pitta Pitta woman and artist. She recently completed a practice-led PhD at Monash University through the Wominjeka Djeembana Indigenous Research Lab, in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
