I havea confession for Day 9 of Advent!

I used to hate Sauvignon Blanc… until wines like this pulled me back in.

Petane Sauvignon Blanc isn’t loud or obvious… it’s layered, textural, sun-ripened and mineral, with white nectarine, lime skin, and that beautiful coastal crunch you get from Gisborne fruit.

And Phil from Petane? He’s one of the quiet legends of Hawke’s Bay.

He got these grapes from a tiny pocket of land in Whatatutu … He’s the kind of classic kiwi guy who gets stuck in… in between fixing his Kombi up after Cyclone Gabrielle floods and making small parcels of delicious wine.. he helps others in dire need too. He works hard… and humbly… crafting small parcels of wine that speak more about place than ego.

This bottle is proof that Sauvignon Blanc can still surprise you… when it’s made by someone who genuinely cares.

This wine is that feeling when you pull a new Hawaiian shirt on, on the first day of your summer holiday.

Last saturday afternoon down the Tuki Tuki Valley at the @harvest_hawkesbay_festival What a fabulous day this event has become. It was great being able to share the fun with my other half Georgia who was sensational on the stall. Thank you so much to liz and the team for inviting us along to share this special place and time with so many amazing people and industry friends. Great vibe at tent 9 with fellow cohorts @495wines and @decibelwines Until next time!

Wow, what a day. The 3rd year of Harvest Hawke’s Bay Festival and my first time here. Live music pumping across the grove, perfect weather, and a sellout crowd of around 2,500 people there to celebrate one of the most exciting food and wine festivals in the country. And it never felt congested for a second.

I had the pleasure of meeting every single wine producer. We spoke about their vineyards, their varietals, and what makes them so special and unique. The biggest thing I took away was how strong the Hawke’s Bay wine community truly is. Everyone lifts each other up. You can feel that sense of support in the energy of the day and in the wines themselves.

Marquees paired restaurants with two wineries each, which made tasting your way around the region feel super easy and fun.

Three years of owning Boutique Connection!!!!

This last year poured fast & furious… full glasses, full calendars, at full tilt.

I couldn’t have survived without this incredible community of small producers around me who are both benevolent and wise.

Here’s to catching my breath before the fourth year kicks in…

Meet Phil Barber - original westie, passionate vintner, surfer, kombi van lover, and all round good bloke.

Phil grew up in Kumeū, West Auckland on a little vineyard with his parents before travelling around the world and eventually putting down roots in Esk Valley, Hawke’s Bay.

When Cyclone Gabrielle swept through Esk Valley, Phil and his family faced devastation. With floodwaters rising to their roof, it seemed in that moment that everything was lost — vineyard, winery, and home.

But resilience runs deep with this one, and thanks to a community effort that would make any Aucklander blush, 12,000 bottles of Petane Wines were rescued, cleaned, and ready to be shared.

At Boutique Connection, we’re proud to support winemakers like Phil, whose love of their land, community and craft shines through, even in the muddiest of times.
