The opening weekend of our show ‘Urban Folk Art’ at the @gowanusdredgers boathouse was awesome! Thanks so much to everyone who came out!! Saturday we were pleasantly surpised to have our walls serenaded by the @yachtrockchoir , check out their page and see how you can be involved, and also follow the @gowanusdredgers to keep up with all their awesome arts and canoe programming! 'Empire State of mind' I thought about New York today & it made me smile 🙂😎 Hence this post. Many of us writers who aren't from there, but are lucky enough to have made a pilgrimage to what is in essence our holy land, remain afterwards forever entranced in a psuedo 'Empire state of mind' don't we? After we've been there it becomes part of us. It seeps into our souls & we're never the same again. I've never ever for even one minute lost that feeling. Arriving there for the first time in 1991 with my good friend Elk (he'd been before) I found myself in awe of the place - No other place in the world before or since has made me feel like I came from somewhere that was 'smaller'. I think I instantly felt the pain of anyone who's ever been called a bumpkin (or whatever Americans call an 'out-of-townie') The feeling was humbling. I understood too the daunting-ness of visiting such a place & a contradiction of feelings engulfed me: A crushing sense of inconsequential-ness. I was well known in London, but here I was an utter fucking nobody. That hurt - I'm still a fucking nobody there by the way. Strangely too though I felt liberated - NYC would not be somewhere I would now have to work hard to earn recognition. To embrace such a desire here on a 2 week visit seemed both crass & futile. New York would be somewhere I could relax, have fun, soak up them NY vibes, connect with writers I'd met preciously in London, make new friends, do a little painting (just to say I'd painted there) & bask in the glory of being able to say 'I've seen New York City' whilst knowing that 95% of graffiti writers on this planet will never be so lucky. I am eternally blessed... New york city forever. 👊🏼🗽❤️ Peace & love to all my NYC people/family. Saludos de Londres & all dat.. 'The Great Wall of Worldom' This wall was painted at Tufnell Park 30 years ago (16/09/91). The general concept was mine & I did the letters, but most of the artistic/talented/funky stuff was done by Seize (WD, Mighty Ethics etc) & Carl (So Tuff Posse) not actually a WD member, but then the favoured painting partner of Seize & a legendary North London writer dating all the way back to the era when him Robbo, Shu2 & co were known as the NLA (North London Artists). The idea behind this wall like our crew name 'World Domination' is a nod to the 'tongue in cheek' delusions of grandeur that permiate the graffiti world. The script to its side reads like a 1991 pre-cursor to the TV series Game of Thrones. This wall (dare I say 'mural') remained intact & untouched for over a year. We'd be lucky to last a week nowadays, but things were different then in so many ways. I can't quite nail what it is, probably because my head is too drowned by & emmersed in it (the graff world) to see the wood for the trees, but something has been lost. It's' innocence' perhaps? Or maybe I've changed & the wide eyed optimism of a mid 20's graff fan has been replaced by those of a cynic. I dunno to be honest. Some days I love how graffiti has elevated from its NYC roots & 'social pariah' status, conquered the world & drawn everyone into its realm & busom - Other days I think 'It's Ours! Can the rest of you please fuck off now'. Shout out to all the Worldoms family- Wherever in the UK & world they might be. YO! GO SEE SHANG-CHI ! It's so much fun, I PROMISE!!! Back in the 90s when Hong Kong Action stars wanted to tour NYCs Chinatown they would hire me and my muscle. I operated in the shadows. I was the greasy link between the On Leong, The Hip Sing, the NYPD 1st Precinct, 5th Precinct, and the lo fan to the north. I made things happen and everyone got paid.
