Words & photos from the last month.

The only words I have found helpful lately are the ones that acknowledge the immense darkness and pain I’m in, don’t expect me to get better, and meet me where I am. They don’t try to fix it or find a “bright side” or “silver lining,” because honestly there is none. Making art about it doesn’t fix it. Being a deeper person now doesn’t fix it. The cold hard truth is that this hurts like hell. I didn’t know someone could feel this much emotional pain and survive it. It’s not fun to hear or acknowledge, but for me I think it’s the only way.

Sometimes you just need a little fill light…

Or a @nickpenson

Taken in the old scanning room in Orem. That place is cleared out now. So weird after being there for 15 years.

Giving away the pro photographer secret recipe. 3 tips from FIND 2.0 Workshop to help you better your craft and grow your business. @jonathancanlas

Stop looking at your competitor’s work.
You won’t stand out if you only take inspiration from your peers. Look at the masters like Richard Avedon, Chuck Close, or Vivian Maier to inform how you approach your photography.

It doesn’t matter if you do weddings, sports, families, engagments, or commercial. You’ll find inspiration outside of your niche.

You’re only as good as your worst photo.
You never want your client to have to cull down images you send them. You want a “perfect, no notes” review. That means when you hit delete on an image, its gone. There is no maybe folder. Only show the best.

The less you show, the stronger your body of work.

Everyone should be working on three personal projects at all times.
Start new project, work on 6-month old project, and add to a persistent project. Personal work is all about finding your artistic voice. The best part? No one can tell you what to shoot.

This and more at FIND 2.0, but don’t take it from us:
“FIND 2.0 is a great, holistic film experience. It demystified film photography and taught me consistent, repeatable techniques that have allowed me to get out of my own way and enjoy photography. From flash to development, seeing the whole process helped me understand what I was missing to create the looks that I have wanted to achieve.”

We’re Moving!

After 15 years in Orem, our dev and scan team is relocating to the Analog Community Center in Provo. Retail, developing, and scanning, all under one roof at our flagship location.

Our last day of production in Orem is August 25th. If you’re dropping off or mailing in film and think it’ll arrive after that date, send it to:

187 W Center St, Provo, UT 84601

Don’t worry, we’ll be checking our Orem mailbox and forwarding anything that comes in, so your film won’t get missed during the transition.

More details to come. Big things are happening in Provo.
