If you’re new here, hello! I’m a Charisma. I’m a black creative based in Orlando, Florida. I’m a photographer, writer, branding expert, and small shop owner (@kismetandcharisma). I also co-produce a podcast about business and balance called @heartandhustlepodcast. A lot of the skills that I have for my career, I learned from volunteering and working in non-profits starting with my first “job” as a volunteer junior counselor for the YMCA when I was in middle school. Now I’m the Membership Director and Social Media Chair at @noworangecountyfl. Living in Orlando, I’m lucky enough to have friends from various races, religions, and backgrounds. But no matter where I go in this country, I always have to look over my shoulder because I’m black. Up and down the east coast of the United States I have dealt with a lot of racism. Sometimes that racism has even come from family or people who I truly believed were my friends. One day I’ll write a blog post to tell you more about it but in this moment, I just want to tell you about Black Joy. It’s strong, it’s powerful, it can’t be contained or destroyed. It’s beautiful, it’s inspiring, it fills me up in a way I can’t explain. It exists against all odds. And I’m lucky because not only do I get to experience it as a black person, I also get to capture it on camera. From personal projects like my Color Me Black series to weddings to boudoir to portraits, I’ve been able to capture so many moments of black joy and record them for future generations. Once upon a time I was a little girl who looked in a history book and wondered how Black people found joy during such dark times. My hope is that in the future, a little girl will look at my photos and not even imagine a time where Black people would be anything but joyous.
