Listen how expertly the tension builds and releases.

Here, @niloufar.nourbakhsh guides us through her piece “For Love Seemed Easy at First”, inspired by family ties stretched across three continents.

In rehearsal at @ps21chatham, our Fellows breathed through music, chased hopeful glissandos, and had the aha moments only possible when working with living composers.

This summer, our Composer Fellows @jaylin.vinson, @maya.mirojohnson, and @jonahcohen.music recorded their original works at the legendary @powerstationatberkleenyc- a landmark studio behind countless iconic compositions.

Watch @peteraskim conduct our Performance Fellows in Cohen’s "Interstate Signals", a road trip through radio tunes, fading signals, and static. At this moment, the signal fully connects and a song bursts forth.

Cape Fear Music Teachers Association kicked off the season with an incredible September workshop featuring Dr. Peter Askim, music director of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Askim shared his inspiring musical journey and philosophy, leaving us with practical strategies to become 360° musicians and teachers. It was truly thought-provoking and motivating!

We were also thrilled to host our first meeting at Cape Fear Community College inside the Education wing of the Wilson Center.

And of course, nothing completes a wonderful meeting quite like a delicious meal by the water at the Marina Grill! 🎶🎹🤍🖤

With music drawn across three centuries, the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra presents a concert inspired by fairy tales, legends, and timeless imagination. The concert features classics, like Mozart's Magic Flute, and new folk-inspired classics from our own time:

Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s propulsive Chokfi’ for percussion and strings focuses on the “trickster” nature of the rabbit in Native American folklore.

The chamber orchestra also performs the world premiere of Wilmington composer Ernesto Ferreri’s New Age Folk Music. A playful exploration of the “folk music” of our time, Ferreri’s premiere updates the concept of folk music to include contemporary American Rock ‘n’ Roll and killer grooves!

Our WORLD PREMIERE of @andreacasarrubios’ The Book of Signatures was punctuated by a percussive keyboard and paper with @garrettarney.percussion.

@berkshireedge noted the "vivid intensity" of this work, no doubt supported by @tommy_j_mesa's "soaring, romantically committed performance".

This new double concerto for cello, percussion, and strings is inspired by the disappearing art of handwriting and the search for authentic human connection in a digital age.

Book of Signatures was part of an exhilarating program by women immigrant composers, curated and conducted by @peteraskim and performed at @nationalsawdust by the next generation of extraordinary string players.

Hear what American music sounds like next.

Whispers of a familiar tune waft through your car’s radio, distorted by static. As you near a local radio tower, the signal grows clearer and stronger. The song bursts forth at last.

A moment from my piece “Interstate Signals,” recorded brilliantly by the 2026 @next_fest fellows and @peteraskim.

What connects Antonín Dvořák, Samuel Barber, and Carlos Simon?

At first glance, these three composers—separated by more than a century—might seem to have little in common. But as Music Director Peter Askim explains in the program notes for our Opening Night concert, Dvořák’s example opened the door for American composers to look beyond Europe for inspiration.

✨Read the full program notes here: https://bit.ly/4hkqqcE ✨

When Dvořák came to New York from Bohemia in the 1890s, he immersed himself in Native American music and African American spirituals, drawing inspiration from the musical traditions he encountered in his new home. His New World Symphony became a powerful example of how musical traditions can intersect and influence one another.

That influence continues across generations:

- Carlos Simon’s Motherboxx Connection draws inspiration from Afrofuturism and the Black diaspora, imagining strength and heroism through a contemporary musical language.

- Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto captures the energy, lyricism, melancholy, power, and optimism of America.

- And Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World” reminds us of where this musical journey began—with a composer from Europe discovering new possibilities in America.

Three composers. Three centuries. Three musical languages. One connected story.

Join the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra for “Opening Night - America 250: Three Generations of American Music” on Saturday, September 26 at CFCC’s Wilson Center.
