One of Peter Moore’s earlier Manuscripts.

Peter Moore began incorporating text into his paintings in 1989, discarding images entirely in the early 2000s. These paintings begun in diary form or from an individual phrase which was developed into lettering incorporating English and Latin text.

Usually focusing on a single subject, these texts included myriad references, from ancient literature to meditations on the gold price, and incorporated both mundane and significant personal life events.

At this time his work made reference to the Roman poets Catullus, Martial and Juvenal, through whom he established parallels between the present day and the politics, commerce and everyday life of the Roman Empire.

MY SURROGATE GRANDFATHER (THE COINCIDING ARTIST)
Peter, my surrogate grandfather, has been a source of artistic encouragement, advice, and inspiration since the day I met him. He is an artist and creates beautiful calligraphic pieces based on memories and thoughts; you can see his work here @peterbarringtonmoore . When I met him, he treated me like a welcoming peer, showing a constant interest in my development when I had so little to give in return. Peter’s openness and interest showed me there is much to gain from artistic collaboration, be that through discussion, advice, or work. He introduced me to a welcoming creative community, and through them, I saw how kindness and approachability are gifts he shares and that taking time to learn from others is as beneficial for you as it is for them. When I met Peter, he was reinventing his style, which I admired and drew inspiration from. Seeing his development and experimentation firsthand and hearing his thoughts on it has been invaluable. As I approached taking my drawing more seriously, he has been a guiding voice and someone to turn to who has trod the same path of creative development. Peter, thank you for being one of my greatest friends, my surrogate grandfather, and the artistic peer who has always made time for me!

Day 24 | Radio Nowhere – Bruce Springsteen

Next Inktober Sketch, prompt is FROST.

I’m aiming to do one of the Inktober prompt drawings a week and I’m going to use these drawings to push myself further than I normally do. Each drawing will attempt to take on more something I have been working towards like; more complicated texture work, unusual subjects and a variety of other factors.

Todays is a reaction to the prompt FROST. After struggling with drawing water in its liquid form I of course decided to try it frozen instead, but in this case I had an idea on how to approach it texturally almost immediately! I drew the leaf texture as normal, leaving white gaps for where the ice would go and then filled that in with a delicate application of dots. At first this didn’t work as the texture didn’t end up looking anything like ice, so in a desperate attempt to salvage the drawing I broke out my white gel pen for the first time and attempted to soften the dotted texture with some white dots… this made it worse…

I then went back over it with the black pen to reapply some black dots which produced an unexpected effect. The white and black ink subtly mixed to give a slight grey to the iced area, which helped it stand out from the leaf texture immediately, and the minimally reapplied dots suddenly worked how I had originally hoped to give the ice shape and form!!! Definitely my favourite happy accident piece and goes to show that sometimes, as my surrogate grandfather @peterbarringtonmoore would say; “First thought, Best thought!”.

If you’ve not seen Peter’s work he does some incredible linguistic and calligraphic pieces inspired by his memories and the psychology of thought. His pieces are amazing, and its been a privilege to watch him develop his style and process for the past decade, take a look at his page if your interested!!!
