Peter Chan is no stranger to pensive imageries in art, having previously explored the concept in the context of traditional Chinese culture. Inspired by contemporary culture and our current state of affairs, Chan’s new works instead invite quiet contemplation of our relationship to the present.

In his new work Turbulence, 2022, Chan uses symbols of the stock market to prompt examination of our participation in the culture of affluence, especially during times of social turbulence. In another vein, Study of Reunion, 2022 leverages the metaphor of a framed screen to draw viewers into a world of familiar romance, inviting projections of our subjective nostalgia.

Departing from his previous series Ideals and Traditions, Chan’s new works elicit an evaluation of the mutual construction of society and individuals in the formation of social mentality.

Experience his works in person at our inaugural exhibition Something Blue.

Something Blue:
14th April - 29th May 2022
* Closed on public holidays

My latest art purchase titled "The Good Life" by the talented @peterchanart courtesy of @youn_contemporary. Thank you for the autographed catalogue, the pink colour is inspired by one of the colours of the Chinese mahjong tile set.

Chinese Canadian artist Peter Chan (@peterchanart) tells a story through his art by often weaving in elements such as Asian traditions and superstitions into his work. He describes his paintings to be “more cheeky and silly than confrontational, yet with an intention of bringing awareness to traditions, superstitions, and cultural beliefs that are consciously and subconsciously embedded in our lives.”

In his painting above titled “Silly Superstition,” a small rice bowl obscures a young woman’s face. Was her spouse a thorough eater as a child, or did their hasty dinner habits leave her with a pock-marked face? Or is she brandishing the bowl and its unfinished contents in defiance of superstition? Interpretation can be left to the viewer; however, even though Chan set out to create the painting because he thought the superstition was bizarre, he has said that he has received messages from others saying they also had the same experience.

Chan’s work provides opportunities to reevaluate cultural beliefs and break off unnecessary negativity or even ancestral trauma. Click our #linkinbio to read our full #MochiMag article.
