For this exhibition, the Musée d’Orsay and Doig have brought together a special group of paintings that were made by the artist over the last two decades. In an adjacent space, he curates and comments on a selection of works from the collection of the Musée d’Orsay.

The distinct selection of Doig’s paintings, hung in one of the museum’s legendary domed rooms, weave traditions of painting into new, strange, and seemingly impossible composites. Presenting the viewer with a kind of mildly agitated, pensive, contemporary form of modernism. Where subjects exist in the mysteries that occur in the spaces between the past and the present, the private and the pastoral.

In the two adjoining rooms that overlook the river Seine, Doig has chosen to bring together a group works from the collection that have not been shown together before. With this selection he not only probes his lifelong interest in painting but looks to dismantle the sense that objects and images are fixed or an unchangeable given. Here visitors encounter the tawny color and dream landscapes of a Gauguin; the naivety of a Rousseau; and portraits characterized by isolation (Félix Vallotton and Vuillard), separation (Mane), and even disappearance (Seurat), etc. Doig’s objective with this display has been to create something dialectical and to show the ways art can remain open to each moment they exist in.

For the winter 2021-2022 Collection, Kim Jones chose to collaborate wIth Peter Doig, one of the most singular painters of the last three decades. The artistic director reinvents ceremonial wear, a veritable living link to heritage, in silhouettes inspired by the house's haute couture savoir-faire and infused with the British artist's bewitching universe. His paintings are transposed onto the pieces, which morph into white canvases punctuated with virtuoso embroidery, jacquards and vibrantly hued prints. A series of hats designed by Stephen Jones are enhanced with illustrations produced by hand by Peter Doig, evoking the symbols of his imagination alongside DIOR emblems.
