When?: TODAY!!! Friday 8/21/26 (Appointments will land between 12pm-7pm. Registration opens at 10:00am at Urban Tails)

How does this work?
1) Sign up IN PERSON at Urban Tails. Appointments will start as early as 12pm and end at 7pm. **LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE** Signups are first come, first serve. Signing up does not guarantee that you will get a tattoo. Each artist will take approximately 7 appointments depending on timing.
2) Get a text from your artist at Patchwork when it’s your turn! (Text will include instructions on how to access their shop at 1936 Lyndale Ave S, half a block from Urban Tails).

Flash designs $120-$150. $20 from each tattoo will be donated to the Urban Tails Mutual Aid Fund!

I’ve been a tiny bit obsessed with collecting and pressing flowers lately. I finally had a chance to sit down and play with them. Neatly arranging flowers is surprisingly pleasant and meditative.
I even convinced @peterharren to join me and he agrees! It’s very satisfying to make art out of found nature objects. There was no agonizing sketch process, no fumbling with turning a blank page into a world filled with people. Flowers are a great creative cleanser for me between deadlines.

This insight comes from my husband who was born and raised on the east coast. His love language is using cuss words. He experienced quite the culture shock when he first moved to Minnesota and was surrounded by people who, well gosh darn it, they just don’t swear, don’t ya know? That’s how we know things are serious now. When the Minnesotans are saying f* ice, it means they’re livid.
*There’s another strike on the 30th and more marches this weekend.

My favorite 2025 moments in no particular order.
Top row:
•This is How We Talk was released and received a star from School Library Journal. (I also followed through with my goal of learning sign language. I still study ASL everyday.)
•I took an animation course and now I can turn my illustrations into moving images.
•I spent a lot more time with my sketchbook this year using my real human hands and traditional materials to make art.
Middle row:
•I experimented with a bunch of flower crafts this year and am so happy with the results.
•I continued going to the figure drawing co-op with my friends. Always trying to improve my drawing.
•My first Little Golden Book was released! A biography about the legendary Henry Winkler.
Bottom row:
•I freaking went to Africa!!! The adventure in South Africa with Wild Tomorrow and the CBCC was absolutely life-changing.
•I worked with Crayola! Not only was it super cool to do a drawing demo video for them, but I loved watching the ASL interpreter and understanding most of the signs! Progress!
•I finished art for my next book. I am really looking forward to the release of A Puppy Like Yours next year.

It was so fun spending the morning at @patchworkmpls watching @peterharren get a gorgeous tattoo by @rachelradiant

Audrey & John’s wedding weekend in the north woods in going to be living in my brain for a long, long time. Something they did that I really loved was opting out of posed family and wedding party photos and choosing to plan intentional time with the people they love instead. A potluck welcome dinner, sharing cozy morning coffee, and toasting champagne with their families post-ceremony led to perfectly candid moments together instead of stiff smiles.
