Paintings for the times we are in - if there’s a better painter in this country right now, I’ll wear a balaclava and move to China.
Extraordinary work I go back to again and again. Incredible work - the whole body of paintings that make up men in suits, is extraordinary. @peterlayzellpainter

✖️BOARDROOM BAROQUE✖️

Our next exhibition is a body of large-scale figurative paintings by Peter Layzell, where suited figures are locked in theatrical compositions that speak to shifting structures of power and instability.

The paintings channel the dramatic energy of Baroque masters into contemporary corporate settings. Sparked by Layzell's pivotal 2019 encounter with Tintoretto and Titian at the National Gallery, these works bring sweeping movements and bold contrasts to present-day power dynamics.

Charged compositions where diagonals and interlocking forms drive movement through boardroom dramas. Business attire situates these timeless narratives firmly in our current moment, reflecting broader questions of authority, spectacle, and collapse.

Join us for the Thursday preview of Boardroom Baroque

Opening event 17th July 18.00 - 20:00
Open 18th July - 2nd August
11-4pm Thurs - Sat

Lo specchio magico. Voto 8/10

A belated THANK YOU after my move in June from Lancashire back to Northumberland… to my art teachers and arty pals over the past few years who have helped me enormously on my art journey. It started with #jeanholt @whalley_art_group 2017; @louisefletcher and #findyourjoy / #findyourvoice, 2019 – where I learned not to be afraid of trying! Then great exposure to all kinds of art and guidance from @jamieholman @joconlon @kimstuddard @peterlyzellpainter @blackburncollegefadual & @andy_maffo printmaking course. Graeme Windle @atlantic_contemporary for all the encouragement. @johnrotherham_artist @cassandrabatterby.artist @fran4kyte at #Art4All and to so many art pals, too many to mention but here are a few: @wiccawilow @pammyh8 @beckymoonart @andreyaplatiafineart. Not in Lancs but a big part of my journey then and now: @emilyballpainting @emilyball_painting with a big thank you to @andreyaplatiafineart for introducing me to Emily’s work. Here’s to the next part of the journey!....
