Book Review: “Do You See What I See?” by Peter Swanson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫⁣
⁣
Despite the title and the Christmasy cover, this isn’t really a Christmas story, although it does take place during the holiday. I’ve been a big fan of Peter Swanson since his first book, so I couldn’t resist this.⁣
⁣
Nicholas Child is a writer. His first mystery didn’t make a huge splash in the publishing world, and his second book, a sequel, was lackluster at best. His publisher dropped him but he keeps hoping inspiration will strike and he’ll be able to create a real hit.⁣
⁣
While he is worried his agent will drop him at any time, he’s surprised when she approaches him with a proposal instead. Another of her clients, Marco Tavares, is having trouble writing the follow-up to his huge bestseller. She asks Nicholas to help Marco determine whether anything he has written can be salvaged, and perhaps help him find his focus.⁣

The plan is for Nicholas to spend the Christmas holidays at Marco’s Cape Cod mansion. Marco and his artist wife, Maeve, live there, along with Marco’s sister and grandmother. And then the house fills with other guests—Marco’s ex and her jealous husband, Marco’s childhood best friend Billy, and James Beers, who at one point accused Marco of stealing his story idea, which he then turned into his massive bestseller.⁣
⁣
Marco isn’t a particularly likable person, and while he agreed to have Nicholas help him, he’s not all that eager to listen to him. Nicholas feels like the gathering is the setup to a murder mystery—everyone in the house, including Maeve, has a reason to want to kill Marco. The next morning, two bodies are found, but what happened the previous evening? And who is to blame?⁣
⁣
This was pretty twisty and I had no idea what was fact and what was fiction. Little by little, Swanson reveals interesting details that aren’t mentioned earlier, and it ratchets up the suspense. I thought the story worked really well as a novella.⁣
⁣
Q: Do you decorate for the holidays? When do you usually start decorating?

So my favorite time of year is coming up and I got my next two months’ TBR. Some of my books I have on my TBR were not on this app, so there are some that I will be reading not shown here. I tend to lean more into the romance reads into the holidays with some holiday/ snowy thrillers and an advent calendar read thrown in. Some of these will be on Kindle Unlimited.

What is on your Holiday TBR? What kind of reads do you lean towards on the holiday time? Do you have any recommendations?

I am really into my thrillers at the moment! I think where I’m after fast, pacy reads, this genre is ideal. So, naturally I’ve gone through my extensive physical TBR and picked out a few to read in the next few months!

last, now, next (what I'm currently reading)

Killing the Boogeyman was sooooo good! around the 100 page mark I started flying through it and couldn't turn my eyes away from the suspense. this is the conclusion to one of my favorite series (but is it really over...?) and I will never stop recommending this unique blend of genres!

Nine Lives is the first Peter Swanson book I've picked up this year and I'm hooked! his books are truly addicting and this one has such a cool premise

as far as my next read... I'm never very good at sticking to a plan. however, I've been hearing about The Secret History for SO long and I would really love to read it this fall. I'm so excited to experience Donna Tartt's writing for the first time. wish me luck!

Do You See What I See? by Peter Swanson
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Welcome to Christmas at Grey Gables, where everyone’s a suspect.
Struggling mystery writer Nicholas Child is commissioned to help another writer finish the overdue follow up to his breakout bestseller.
Travelling to Grey Gables, the writer’s Cape Cod home, in the week before Christmas, he discovers a house full of secrets, and a cast of very suspicious guests.
When two shocking deaths occur, Nicholas tries to write his account of what happened, and a perfectly fiendish puzzle starts to emerge.

I didn’t realise this was such a short story, it was brilliantly written that when the end came round, I needed the story to continue. It was precisely written, the plot thickening out quickly. I love the pretence of a group of people coming together for Christmas, before a murder happens. It was constructed in a very clever way, different chapters giving way to the history and links with these people. It had more twists than I realised or guessed. It was absolutely brilliant and not too Christmassy.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

QOTD: have you begun to read any festive reads or is it too early?

Happy Monday and - most importantly for me - happy third #oldskoolchallengeclub participation post 🤣🤣

This week I’m sharing a #spookyshades stack in #blackmagic - the wizard bunny is on loan from Miss 6 (I had to get written permission and everything).

We had a busy weekend and my planned “day off” to work on my library shelving didn’t eventuate, but I’m hoping to make some time to get in there this week 🤞🏻

QOTD - what’s something you’d like to do/make time for this week?

A talent for murder by Peter Swanson

I love when you read a book from a favourite author and you instantly feel at home with the writing style and feel of the book.

This happens every time with Peter Swanson's books, for me. Even when I am reading them for the second time! 🫢😍

Martha suspects her husband of being a murderer, so she enlists the help of an old friend - who you might remember from TKWK and TKWS... yep, Lily Kintner - our favourite unhinged sociopath!
