I'm doing a reading from my memoir "The Heart is Meat" about working in the Gansevoort meatpacking district in the early 80s; I'll be reading with painter and memoirist Sally Eckhoff who wrote a fine book, F*ck Art (Let's Dance) about living and painting in the East Village from roughly 1978 to 1988 (the Summer of Sam!) We'll each do a short reading then discuss NYC in the 80s and answer questions. If you're around Marymount Manhattan college on September 11 at 6 pm, stop in.

✨ We end commencement season 2025 celebrating the newest grads of MMC’s college programs at the Bedford Hills and Taconic correctional facilities for women. In ceremonies held on May 29, 19 graduates at Bedford Hills and three at Taconic received bachelor’s or associate’s degrees.

MMC has proudly granted degrees at Bedford Hills since 1997. It began awarding degrees at Taconic in 2019 in partnership with Hudson Link for Higher Education.

👏 Congratulations to the Class of 2025—and welcome to the alumni family! We’re so proud of you! 💙

🎓 At MMC’s Commencement ceremony on Friday, our grads got to hear from someone who once stood in their shoes: Tony Award-winning actor and alumna Annaleigh Ashford ’05.

Ashford, a celebrated film, television, and recording star, as well as a #Broadway veteran, was awarded an honorary doctorate for her extraordinary contributions to the arts and her advocacy work supporting recovery and fighting addiction stigma through the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and more. (Hello, Dr. Ashford!👋) Watch to hear some of the wisdom she shared with the Class of 2025! 💙✨
