PANINARO 008 — COVER
Derby della Madonnina, by Peter O’Toole.
The cover of Issue 008 is inspired by one of the most iconic photographs in European club football: Marco Materazzi and Manuel Rui Costa standing calmly together on the pitch, like two old mates, while all around them the madness of the Champions League Derby della Madonnina was unfolding.
It’s a photograph we’d wanted to pay homage to for a long time. And after seeing the incredible work Peter did for his beloved Huddersfield Town, we knew exactly who we wanted to bring it to life.
So, ladies and gentlemen, here it is, Peter O’Toole’s Milan Madness cover for Paninaro 008.

✨ When the stars aligned… adidas, illustrator Peter O’Toole @peterotooleart and adidas collector Quote came together to create something truly fabulous.

The result of that perfect alignment was the adidas Originals Consortium ZX 420 “Quotoole”.

Released in November 2014, this highly sought-after runner was born from a unique cross-continental digital friendship. British illustrator Peter O’ Toole and Berlin-based adidas collector Daniel Kokscht, better known as Quote, originally met through the online forum Crooked Tongues.

What started as an online friendship eventually became a collaboration — bringing together two creative minds and their shared love of adidas to create one seriously special ZX. 👟🔥

Gone are the days when the England team pairs up with the musical flavour of the month to record a pre-tournament song. Probably a good thing. They should probably have stopped after New Order's 'World in Motion' tbf.

These days, somewhat against the grain of modern football and its propensity for organised fun, the musical connection is largely organic. We've seen 'Sweet Caroline' become the go-to theme tune for England in recent tournaments, and while it's the ideal track for well-oiled Boxpark gobshites to bellow at each other, it's hardly representative of anything other than just being easy to sing.

That's why Wonderwall taking on that mantle in the current tournament makes sense. Even Noel Gallagher has always been vague about any actual meaning in its lyrics, but it's not about the words, as much as what the song represents. The Oasis renaissance last year reminded us all that at our core, we English are a weird mix of unity and rebellion. Oasis themselves embody the modern nation we've become. They're kids of Irish immigrants from a modest estate in South Manchester, who became the biggest band in the world for a time. The similarities between their story and that of some of the England team are easy to see.

Last year, we (Proper) were given the task to create a fanzine-style publication to accompany the Live '25 Oasis reunion. In pulling it together we were reminded of how Oasis and its fans interact in a way pretty similar to how football culture works.

At a time when some countries do their best to totally undermine the spirit and force for good football can be in uniting an entire population (yeah, looking at you, Donald), there are lads from Stourbridge, Leytonstone, Barnsley and Newham singing the anthem of a generation back at people who have travelled thousands of miles to support them, from Leek, Preston, Crawley and Bideford.

England isn't perfect but when we have a good go at music and football we're alright aren't we?

Preview:
During Hungary’s preparation for the 1978 FIFA World Cup, Landersheim, France, served as the backdrop for a highly unique, unofficial warm-up event.

On May 16, 1978, the Hungarian national team played an unconventional training match against Tunisia at the Adidas Centre in Landersheim.

Landersheim was the headquarters of Adidas France, managed by Horst Dassler (son of Adidas founder Adi Dassler).

The Match Details:
The encounter was entirely non-traditional and treated purely as a closed-door training exercise.

Unusual Format:
Instead of a standard 90-minute game, the teams played a shortened 50-minute match consisting of two 25-minute halves.

The Result:
The match ended in a 2–2 draw.

The Atmosphere:
The "stadium" was far from typical. The official match attendance recorded no general public fans, but instead hosted 200 journalists who were invited to watch the two World Cup-bound teams test their squads.
